a shogun 2 battle where my army was outnumbered 2 to 1. I set up defensively on a hill and broke off katanas into a forest behind a an adjacent hill.
Set my spears and bows defensively. pulled my cav off to the side.

Second stack joined enemy and they tried to zerg me and envelope. mashed their archers with my cavalry, lost all of them but took the archers. slow walked katanas around the hill and timed it out perfect. about the time they met my lines my katanas took them in the ass and my bow monks sniped their general. routed some 3000 men with about 1200 tactics felt good.

That place wasn't bad for me, but as a kid, I got stuck on the level where you're on top of the buildings and have to like grappel across to the other building tops. I couldn't figure out how to use the damn grappel hook

four kings are piss easy, took them down on first try still being new to DS and had a shit build (run around naked for fast rolls and used a 2h sword). Not sure if glitch or not, but if you mow them down fast enough you only need to fight two of them (could be just one actually, can't remember really) since they all share the same health bar I think and all it takes is for it to get down to 0 and you're golden.
Ornstein and Smough on the other hand were a pain in my fucking ass I needed therapy

When I was playing GTA:San Andreas.
I got stuck on the "follow the damn train" mission like everybody else. So after few dozen failed attempts, I decided to just start sandboxing. I would go onto rival gang turf and shoot other gang members, start a block war, and take over that block, then move to the next block and repeat. Sometimes your turf comes under attack and you have to defend it or allow another gang to take a block of your turf, but once you conquer the last block controlled by a gang they go away permanently. I completely wiped out the Front Yard Ballers, the Vatos, and whoever that other gang was. The entire map was green and no one ever gave me any shit anymore. Took something like three months, though I wasn't playing all day every day.

Then one day while making a "what the hell, I'll give it another shot" run at that stupid train mission I accidentally landed on one of the three guys on the train. That left only two for Big Smoke to kill (which is all he's capable of) and I finally passed it.

Only to find out that immediately after that mission, Officer Tenpenny frames you for something and this one LAPD cop somehow has the authority to reinstate all three rival gangs and redistribute all of the turf I've spent three months taking over. A thousand people quit my gang because this one cop said so. Even if he IS the great Samuel L Jackson, that is total bullshit. Which brings me to my greatest challenge I've ever faced:

Giving a shit about playing GTA again after that, which I have yet to accomplish.

Also there was that one time I decided to only play Baek and Hwoarang on Tekken Tag Tournament until I could clear 30 wins in Survival Mode using only the two kick buttons and the tag button (no punches or d-pad). That one I did accomplish.

The actual SMB2 (what we got in the States was Dream Factory) had a bunch of neat new game mechanics like poison mushrooms and crosswind. When you were jumping into the wind, you couldn't jump as far. When you were jumping with the wind, you could jump farther.

And somewhere in the third or fourth world (been a long time) there was this bit where you have to hold B and charge up your run and then jump with the wind across five or six screens worth of nothing but fall-to-your-death and land on a pillar only one block wide. The stuff blowing across the screen and the fact that you were not visible at the time you needed to let go of the jump button (way above the screen) made it extremely difficult to time since you had nothing on-screen you could attempt to time it with. Out of hundreds and hundreds (maybe even over a thousand) tries I landed on that block ONE time only to realize I should have immediately jumped again because there was nothing close enough to reach with a regular jump. My best friend and I had wasted, and would continue to waste, most of that summer trying to get past that and neither of us ever hit that column again.

I remember I got to the end and tried to play it safe by shooting the guy in the leg but then they give you a message like: "True Veterans always aim for the head" or shit like that and I had to restart. Damn near smashed my 360.
I have shit memory so I'm not sure, but the classic Ornstein and Smough in Ds1 is obviouslly a huge bitch, and the new DLC for Ds3 has a boss that I spent about 3 and a half hours trying to kill.

Final Fantasy 1, when I was about 8.

I'd started playing at 6 and holy shit was that difficult. After picking up and dropping it over a couple years after reaching a milestone at a time, I'd finally finished it. I vividly recall how nervous I was and how elated I was to beat it. I'm not sure I ever recaptured that excitement, but definitely built my love for rpgs from it...even though jrpg now bore the shit out of me.
