I had an abcess on the side of my buttcheek that had been lanced. Same with gauze but had to do it 2 times a day for 2-3 weeks. Luckily I had an ex girlfriend with medical experience who would come change it out.
What happens is the infection basically attaches itself to the gauze and when you pull it out it pulls most of the infection with it.
