I have owned 7 vehicles. 5 of which were manual transmissions. I'm 31 now and my truck is an automatic which to be honest is really nice. However when it's paid off I will buy a toy car and it will most definitely be a stick.

A manual tranny ain't worth it. I can upshift without using the clutch, etc, but it's still too much of a pain in the ass in stop-and-go congested traffic; the fuel economy isn't noticably better (even without CVT); and it's not appreciably cheaper to get manual.

I'm an American and I've driven a manual transmission for 12 years. I've driven the same manual transmission. Not only do I know how to drive it from point A to point B, I know how to do it without fucking it up. I need a new ride soon, but I think keeping a 1989 Ford alive for 12 years is a good accomplishment for an American.

merica here, at 14yo my first car was a maverick 5 speed manual i didn't touch a automatic transmition till my 20s.

The reasons manuals are great:

-Compression start. Starter not working or battery dead? Roll down a hill or have a friend push you and pop it into second gear. Starts right up every time.

-Better mpgs. Because you can react to oncoming terrain like a steep hill, you can shift gears or speed up way before a computer would calculate the need to shift or accelerate. Unless you drive like a moron. This might change as cars become more advanced though.

The are only undesirable in high traffic situations (stop and go).

Yeah, my pos 1989 ford gets 25mpg when I drive it. My brother in law had to borrow it for a month. He told me it only gets 10-15 mpg. I rode with him once to give him pointers on how to get better mileage. I'll never let him drive a vehicle I own again after seeing the way he treated it lol.

Only if the bushings in the linkage are bad. They are there to keep everything fully disconnected or connected even when there is a bit of movement in the stick. Stick starts getting sloppy, get a bushing kit, stick it in, shifts like new again. It's usually a $20-40 fix. If you let it get sloppy and don't change the bushings, then you start getting undue wear.
