What's it like working retail?

Really depends on where you work.
I worked at a gas station and two stores up in the mountains and you could tell customers to fuck off and the boss/co-workers had your back. It was pretty nice.

Reallll fucking shitty. Granted I work at WalMart of all places and it's fucking awful. Only reason I've stayed so far is Electronics is a joke to work in, honestly I go in and don't do dick all most nights. Co-workers are pretty sweet too so that helps.

Aside from that can't stand the atmosphere of the place and company.

I work at Target, it's not bad. Then again I actually do my job and I'm not completely retarded. Coworkers for the most part are fine, most of the management is fine, and the pay in my store at least is starting $1 over minimum (in Massachusetts this is now $12/hr for stocking shelves). In Target you manage to avoid many of the trashy customers Wal-Mart gets, but the way they treat employees is really fucking gay. No Wal-Mart song thank God, but it's painfully liberal (customers are called guests, every meeting we have to commend our coworkers, AKA "team members" for doing something nice, that kind of shit).

I worked at Target for almost 2 years, and it was pretty easy. I started in backroom at a new store, and by the time I left, I could do 4 different "jobs" around the store. Purposely never learned to cashier though- fuck dealing with whiny guests. I got pretty lucky with great coworkers though- can't say I hated any of them.

Overall it's a good gig as retail goes. Get along well with my coworkers and my bosses are fair and reasonable. I've been fired from all the retail jobs I've had.

I'm manic depressive and I didn't know at the time but one night at Home Depot I spray painted "Fuck this shit" on the outside garden wall and thought it was hysterical. They found out and the next day gave me $9 in cash for the hour I was there and escorted me out.

I got fired from Target because my manager said I was running around the dept intentionally avoiding him and playing around. I was in the same spot the whole time this was said to have occurred. So I got in a fight with him and told him to suck my dick and shit and so I wasn't allowed back.

I spent two summers working retail.
First summer was Target. I had the 4:00 am shift, unloading boxes, stocking shelves, managing inventory position. Two managers. One was a fuckshit 30 year old dudebro who didn't need to tell me in order for me to know that he 100% played hockey in high school. Experience was shitty overall. Waking up that early was not worth $11 an hour. (though that was the starting wage). Left for college at end of summer, found out over christmas break that I had been fired over a scheduling error, I am now blacklisted and cannot work at target anymore because dudebro manager got totally ticked off bro that i left him 1 man down over tax free weekend.

Next summer I worked at Toys R Us. Could not have been more unlike my target experience. All of my coworkers were kindhearted, understanding, and fun to be around. Kids who got to shop at Toys R Us usually had a good day, and it was fulfilling to be a part of that. Closing shifts sucked because we had to collect all the shit that kids picked up and moved around the store and put it all back, (which was kinda tough at first when you don't know where things go), but overall was a good experience, despite only making $8 an hour.

I work at an independently owned store that has only one location. I don't really mind working there. The pay is not great but it's in cash under the table at least. I get to play whatever music i want in the store while i work. The majority of the customers aren't annoying. Sometimes someone interesting comes in. I manage the backroom of a Walmart. Overall it's not bad. In the past I've had issues with higher up managers giving me the shaft over various things because they have little to no idea what goes on in their own store but fortunately with the help of a couple of other higher up managers we managed to change them. It's pretty chill as of now.

I hardly see customers all day but even when I do there's never been any problems. Just a lot of where can I find this and how much does this cost?

The only downside is managing the occasional shit teir employee that thinks they can get away with anything.

Not to mention all of the tail that either works in the store or shops there. Got dayum.

Currently working at Kroger and I swear it's the worst shit. The "front end" where all the main business is at is always loud and the service desk team is always calling people from OTHER departments because so many people quit on a regular basis because of how awful they are at managing.

The real kicker is that they always blame those below them in paygrade and are always constantly slacking off and talking way too much when they are forced to move their fat asses to a register.

How many pieces was your average truck size? My store often had 2200 piece trucks on normal days, and on more than a few occasions, two 1700-ish piece trucks. Double truck days were awful, because I was in charge of dealing with the cardboard boxes and other trash. You had to fucking work at sonic the hedgehog speeds to finish before the end of your shift, and I worked part time so I had no excuse to refuse staying past the end of my shift to finish it up.

1. Worked at Walmart and damn near everybody gets treated like shit. The managers shit on you, the customers shit on you, coworkers shit on you. But its what happens when you're the hot spot for trash/niggers.

2. Gamestop was fun. Most customers are cool except the moms who bought an M rated game for their kid. Or niggers who think you some how control the trade-in value of shit. I hated leaving there as a manager but corporate/LP bullshit will break you after so long.

3. Lowes/Home depot. Yes, its full of methed out construction workers, bitches looking for some random item they found on slickdeals that had been 500 dollars but is now 42 cents, and people who have torn something apart and didn't bring the broken item with them so you get the "its a round thingamajig that goes on the washer". Corporate is very customer oriented but stores aren't suppose to be "walked over" by people trying to scam a few bucks. Plus the Mexicans outside will usually share their lunch if you don't run them off.

Just finished my first month at Lowes in the paint department, so far it's been decent. I want to be more grateful, I honestly couldn't ask for a better starter job. I had no past experience and they basically gave me the job. But yeah, I fucking suck at communicating and it sucks when the customer asks for help about a product and I'm clueless. I used to give electronic workers so much shit (internally) but fuuuck these guys are just trying to earn a buck. I'm in the same situation, I don't know shit about painting except the very basic.

If you're looking for work at a grocery store go in and check it out first, its pretty obvious going in if itll be shit or not. Been in retail 5 years now. Despise it. Working in it legitimately made me hate people. The people in charge of us? Most of them have never worked in a store so they have no idea what they're telling us to do. Hours are random, stores are horribly understaffed and your stores schedules are automatically generated so good luck with it paying attention to your availability. And holidays are a strain with the family because of one day off that doesn't work for a lot of them. I guess as far as where I work the pay is alright for starting out, and they help with school, but anything beyond that is absolute cancer.

Salesman for Rex TV and Appliance chain of 500 stores. Small competition for Circuit City back in the day. Made minimum wage plus commissions. Worked 12 hour days. Average take home per month was 2 grand. Made 3 to 5 grand a month during Christmas season. Best job I ever had.

Have you seen Employee of the Month? Pretty accurate, if you ask me. You HAVE to get along with your coworkers and managers, otherwise you're just gunna hate going there every morning. You can be a hermit in warehouse just stacking and scanning shit in, but the day goes a lot faster if you have peeps to goof off with every now and then.
Night shift goes by fast, you have better chances of goofing off with coworkers, little to no interaction with customers, and lots of breaks. However, not sleeping at night regardless of sleeping schedule will fuck up your health badly.

When they're not trying to pass fake 100s, they're shitting all over the toilet seats. The Jews, ironically, have been the nicer ones. I had one rabbi pray for my sanity after he saw me banging my head against a wall after dealing with a mexican customer who alternated between trying to convince me the power tools were half off, to give him an extra discount, and "I no speak english" when I told him there were no discounts.

I currently work at Walgreens, and it's still just as bad. It was awesome when I started working there, but the turn-around started to pick up a couple months after I was hired. I am now the most senior non-management employee in the store.

Being super understaffed right now and being over 21 I am always chained to the registers and left to the wolves while the managers fuck around doing whatever it is they do all day. The high schooler employees are always hiding in the back end of the store pretending to work on totes or tags their whole shift, ignoring half of my IC3s.

The favoritism is indeed VERY real. We recently finally got another 21+ new hire, and this manipulative cunt is slightly more social than me and weaseled into working on the back end away from the registers as well, so if I am scheduled with her I am left to the wolves at the register.

My workload isn't even reduced compared to the hide n' seekers either. I have to stock the same fucking shit they do, but I also have to ring out 140-180 customers on the average day.

I do make things a little more bearable for myself though since I am always on the front end alone and no one is ever keeping an eye on me. I get an energy drink and candy every shift and I NEVER pay for it anymore. My 30 minute breaks are more like 38, and 15s closer to 20 minutes. They can't say shit about it because we're so understaffed.

I'm not an antisocial person, but I do learn more towards the introverted side, so my brain is completely and utterly fried after about 100 customers. Third shift manager waltzes in at 10pm and immediately bitches at me for not greeting the customer that walked in after her.

She did some major backpedaling before I clocked out at 11pm though, trying to compliment me for all the hard work I did that day. She must have seen what she thought was an "I'm going to clock out and never clock back in face." Bitch must see that look a lot.

I work at a family owned liquor store. I work with one of the owners two nights a week, and the other owner 1 night a week, and on Sundays I work alone. I thought going in to the job, I would have a lot of hot young college girls coming in to buy liquor. That isn't the case. In the month I have worked there, there have been maybe 6 hot girls come in. Most of the customers are 40+. My advice is get somewhere where you can really move up. Like a trade job. They likely pay slightly better than retail to begin with and once you're fully apprenticed in, then you can start making a middle class income.

I'm a meat cutter for a store that still has butcher shops.

You will notice the herd mentality of mankind to a huge extent at a job like this. 95% of the customers are in 10 percent of the time and once you get a couple people at the counter everyone charges. AS much as people say they hate crowds, most people will run straight towards one, so you absolutely cannot let the line back up.

Also, if there's someone just standing at the counter with nothing to do, no one will approach, but if you're frantically trying to get something done, they will attack the counter relentlessly and interrupt every 30 seconds.

Also, old people love being in the way. They have no idea what they're doing or where they're going but they will always stand in your way and move to where they KEEP in your way. I think it's like a toddler trying their hardest to be noticed as a sign they're relevant. When they do this, I just stop right behind them, put my hands in my pockets and stare through them at where I'm trying to go. They do it for attention, so I don't give it. I don't say anything and do not acknowlege them. They'll continue to stand there dim-witted and blank like, no idea what they're doing for a minute and then walk off....

And screaming toddlers, rude people, picky foreigners, and rude/picky old people. You will never let ANY of this get to you even remotely after retail, if it teaches you one thing, it teaches you patience.

That being said, it's not a bad gig, but don't become a cashier, it's very hard hectic work, pays nothing, and it's very hard to move out of. If you have a meat department that cuts meat, meat cutters get paid real job decent; get in there...

So everyone's first job seems to be usually one of three things either fast food, a real restaurant, or retail.

My advice is that you pick retail, there's more room to move up and have it turn into a real job if nothing else works out. They don't work you quite as hard as a restaurant will and the work typically isn't as dirty.

If you must get into food though, go to a real restaurant, like a steak house or Italian joint. If you aren't an attractive person, don't expect to make much money with a waiter/waitress gig. Dishwasher can lead to being a cook at a good restaurant which *can* be almost a middle class income at some places.

But better yet. Try to get in at a machine shop, butcher shop, welding shop.... something like that. It can lead to a trade which can get you paid like a real job. If you didn't go to trade school though, expected just to do cleanup and bitch work at first, they'll gradually teach you the field if you're competent...
