It was he is a friend of mine from highschool we traded cars after my divorce so my wife couldn't take my car then he wrecked my car so I kept his. Diesel is really strange in the states. For as long as I can remember, diesel was always cheaper in the US and rage engines went forever. Then, all of the sudden, diesel became more expensive than any other tier, it is still touted as being a cleaner and better way of travel.

But, diesels used to last forever and the prices to repair them goes up every year. It's like they're slowly being made to be a very expensive problem for the motor industry. It's like they're being designed to be disposable.

All cars are, they're no more fragile than Petrols though anon, I've got a Peugeot common rail diesel, it's done 300k(190k miles) and it's only ever had basic service components, belts, filters etc, still gets 1000km city and 1200km country from a time when petrols of the same capacity were lucky to get 800 new. If you listen to the internet a Peugeot couldn't reach 300k, let alone a common rail one.

1999 Honda Civic Hatch
I'm 34, original owner, bought it new when I was 17.

Still runs perfect. Paint is looking pretty bad but I can't get rid of it yet. Hasn't cost me a cent in maintenance other than expected scheduled things like brakes, tires, belts, oil changes etc.

I can't convince myself to start paying several hundred a month in a car payment for a new car when I have my old beater that still is 100% reliable and has been for almost 18 years.

Had a 97 hatch. Never big repairs, but was getting tired of nickel/dime fixes. That and no AC (not equipped on my model) in CA valley summers. Liked the 41 MPG.
Test drove a new Mazda 3 5-door. Superior commuter except ~35 MPG. Sold hatch immediately and happily pay $270/mo.

Believe me, I wish we had more diesel in the US besides the VW TDIs, but my "regular" car gets ~380 on 10.something gallons and has ~160hp.

I would expect better than that these days.

My wife used to have an old 84 MB 240D - piss yellow - and I don't know what the mileage was, but we could drive that thing around all damn day on one tank. Road trips were a breeze.
