I've lived in a small town in the country my whole life. It's peaceful, but everyone knows your business, which I really don't care for. Also we have the lowest literacy rate and highest teen pregnancy rate in our entire state. They just cut funding to some of the extracurricular activities in the high school, so that the football program could get new equipment.
There's nothing to do, and everyone here is fairly uneducated.
I'd take a city that's not garbage over a polite country town any day.

Your life should go country->city->country. A rural setting is perfect for your formative years, growing up calm and peaceful is the best thing you can do for a kid. The city is great to live in during the middle of your life, or while you're young. At 18 you should experience the night life, enjoy the bustle and things to do. It's really great for trying new things and meeting new people. After you settle down but before you have children, move back to the country and live out your life with family.
