Go as far north as you can. The lower himalayas are pretty clean and the people are accustomed to treating tourists as well as natives. Most cars in india are stick shift, and air pollution of india is pretty high. Hence I suggest staying out of big cities and going north. Also there's lots of tolls, but the toll roads are pretty well maintained. Driving culture in india is similar to china's or japan's, where honking is a polite way to ask someone to move. Traffic is awful and seeing a yak/cow in the street on a small village road is common, less common in big cities. Don't ever harm a cow in front of a hindu. Some states punish that, while other states will sell beef. Know the laws based on the state and don't assume you can bribe your way out of shit, although most times you can.
