The sad fact is, it's unrealistic and in most cases impossible for an autistic person to adapt. I understand what you're getting at though.

Ordinarily, say a child always demands the have dinner from a blue plastic tray. You can teach them to use a plate and after being upset for a while, they will get used to it and forget all about it.

With an autistic child, it is VERY difficult to go through change and insanely frustrating. You refuse to let them use plastic trays and it just, for want of a better term, does not compute. This is where an autistic person may get violent or even self destructive (head banging is typical), not for attention but because all of a sudden the world doesn't make sense to them.

To an Autistic person, all they want is a clearly defined routine and a life that can be predicted with 100% accuracy so they feel safe. Variation just doesn't make sense.

That is why, say if a TV show is cancelled, it's genuinely traumatic and not just someone having a tantrum, because to them, the world as they know it has changed.

If you're looking it from a purely fascist point of view then yes, they are a 'drain on society' as in the majority of cases they can never expect to put in more than they take out but this is where humanity and not being a psychopath comes into it.

The best thing that can be done is allow them to create a routine for themselves that is not too demanding on others and make sure they have people who care about them and understand around them. It is kinda tragic but that's disabilities for you.

This is another difficult parenting decision tbh.

You can push an autistic person incredibly hard to the point of mental torture (which it is for them) in the hopes they might be able to behave slightly more 'normal' but on top of everything else, you can see what a massive strain that is on everybody involved.

It's definitely a balancing act between ignoring any of the child's ambitions and pushing them too hard (which for an autistic child isn't very hard at all) and making them miserable, along with yourself.

Most parents value their child's happiness over their success and with a very low limit set, 'why bother?' is less of a defeatist attitude, more a realistic statement.

Like with my sister, I try to get her involved with little tasks that are within her range, enough to make her feel useful and build confidence. Like putting together a mixed salad as I cook a meal or explain to me certain cartoon plots, just so she doesn't stagnate. But I'd never for example, keep trying to teach her a maths problem she absolutely can't get, that'd be selfish on my part just to say 'look how good I am at teaching!'

I'm genuinely on the spectrum, and I wanna say that I overcame my condition because I'm in the military and will soon be getting out to go to college for a nursing degree, but I see all these other cases of Autism and it is really sad. A lot of them are brilliant people, it's just the mentality they have that hinders them from being beneficial. When I was in elementary school, I didn't know how people worked, and so as a result I was a general raptard back in the day: throwing chairs at people who looked at me weird, punching people who called me names, screaming at the teacher when I didn't get my assigned seat. Idk. Again, I'm thankful I grew past that in middle school and began to learn how to socialize thanks to the Special Education services provided by California at the time, and even though I still have some issues like not being able to thoroughly understand facial cues, social cues, and vocal cues from time to time, plus the whole not understanding a lot of common sense type stuff, I can still function and be productive in society...whereas a good majority of us are doomed to dependency.

It's kinda scary when I think about it...how close I was to just being a burden to my family and society, but I'm just glad that wasn't the case.
