Upgrading items requires you to sell them, buying items upgraded causes them yo break. In order to repair broken items you have to go to the blacksmith, who requires an item to repair your item. Said item is in random generated shop only available when a secret number matches your player id and the item you need is not garanteed. This is not available until final boss is defeated. This must be done for every time.

After 400 hours of committed gameplay and beating the final boss, all you get is a screen that says "congratulations" with an option to start from the beginning.

One of the puzzles is that some asshole doesn't let you pass until you give him the password. There are no clues and the password randomly changes each time you guess.

every time X hours your character is reset to level 1, the number of hours is chosen randomly at level one

You have a hunger bar, if you don't eat for one hour you die. The only food you can eat is cup noodles and buying cup noodles requires you to fight puppies and kittens, which will one shot you, in an arena.

Have an fairly interesting looking locked door in an easy to find, but really fucking annoying to reach place. Throughout the game occasionally give the player keys that look like they would work with the door, force the players to spend 10 minutes backtracking to get to the door, and then make absolutely none of the keys work on the door.

Alternatively, give them a working key at some point and make the payoff good. Then repeat with a similar but more important looking door and give absolutely no key to it. This is the video game equivalent to the 3rd pig.
