Yes hehe, but actually forward facing wings actualy induce lift at slower speeds, look at some ww2 BV jet bombers, they were some of the first to utilize this feature to make use of shorter runways. that x29 is fucking rad tho

>>727294719
this is a shuttle
>>727294330
Because it didn't bring anything new to the table that was strictly useful for space travel.
The Russians were able to fly unmanned missions with the soyuz since forever and they still use the damn thing because it's super reliable.
The shuttle weights a lot, can carry too little payload compared to other spacecrafts and puts the lives of 7 people at risk with basically no feasible abort procedures in case something went wrong during launch.
The whole reusability logic didn't really apply because refurbishing the thing for the next launch cost way more than expected, to the point that it wasn't more economical than a conventional rocket launch.
It was a glorified manned fairing with a terrible killing ratio, it was meant more for military purposes that were never needed and was basically responsible for stopping technological progress in space travel for a few decades because they were able to sell the concept to pretty much everyone who wanted to send something to a space station.
It failed at pretty much everything it tried to achieve.
It's an engineering marvel, mind you, and I find it gorgeous, but it was not what space travel needed at the time. Rocket launchers ended up being cheaper, safer and able to being launched with a higher frequency. SpaceX is trying to revolutionise space travel again with reusable rockets that could potentially cut costs a lot if done right.
Only time will tell.
Sorry but most beautifull plane today.

>>727295209
If you go read about the buran program (Russian shuttle clone) you'd see the Russians were smart enough to fly it once without even going to space and park it in a warehouse forever because it was such a stupid idea.
They thought it must be something great if the Americans spent such a great deal of money and time to develop the orbiter, but when they actually managed to build and fly the thing, they realised it was too retarded to be useful, especially when the Russians already had the Volvo of space travel (Soyuz) which was simple, cheap and reliable.
The fall of the Soviet Union played a big role in the closure of the buran program, but they already knew the thing would have never been used again even if the country didn't collapse on itself.
Too bad the buran ended up destroyed when the warehouse it was parked in went down

I mean the wings that are glowing blue would probs be a good place to start looking. Or I might be wrong and they just stuck some LEDs on the side cause it looked cool.
This, the Wooden Wonder or Flying Matchbox aka the "Mozzie".
Wooden construction, 2 crew, twin Merlins, one of the fastest aircraft of its time, conceived an an unarmed bomber so fast it could outrun fighters (which it could certainly do). Then thyy put cannon and machine guns in the nose. So versatile it served as: unarmed, high-level photo-reconnaissance; precision low-level bomber (e.g 633 squadron); pathfinder bomber; night fighter, U-boat hunter (equipped with a self-loading 6-pounder cannon).
Bomb load was nearly equal to the protoype of the Flying Fortrress
Sadly none left flying.

dr1 was inherently unstable, which is good in a fight, could turn quick, but it was slow, as all triplanes are, couldn't dive for shit, had good initial rate of climb but poor performance at altitude, and it was poorly constructed. the wings fell off multiple times, the cockpit was shit and would fuck your face up if you had a crash landing. it was awesome at the beginning of the war.

It's really a sad story, because it's objectively a great piece of engineering and the orbital engines (the small ones, not the one used for launch) are some of the most advanced and refined engines man ever produced.
It could have been so much better than it ended up being, but if it never existed at all I think rocket technology would be much more advanced right now.
Everyone is dumping money in rocket tech rather than reusable space planes now, because it's still the only viable method to reach space. The only exception being the ESA plane that has been tested successfully a while ago, but it's still far from being complete.
I really hope SpaceX succeeds in its mission with the reusable first stages, because that would open up a new era of affordable space travel

>>727301324
Number of aircraft at the front basically, the Sabres never served there in the sort of numbers the 15's did. Trying to find a decent source, easier to watch documentaries tbh.
As far as my comment about fitout the Mig was equipped with two different weapons with two different velocities meaning convergence was an issue, they also had a comparatively slower rate of fire, big HE potential and ideal for bombers but not as able to saturate an area in a burst as the 86's lighter more numerous guns.

I've seen those figures disputed and put at closer to 5-1 and 1.4-1 against the Russian aces that "didn't serve" in the Korean war but never did they operate at a loss and generally flew outnumbered in formations of 16 facing often above 40 Mig's with better fuel reserves in the alley.

Your argument seems pretty decent, but both MiG-15 and F-86(A) perform on par in same ideal conditions. MiG is lighter, carries less payload. F-86 had a G-suit, radio aeronav, more aggressive (wiki says this) pilots etc.
So eh.
Also (you already knew this but anyway) the most performing ace was Soviet folk.
I mean to say that with individual skirmish Mig vs F it's really pilot's skill which matter most and not the hardware.

(In fairness almost everyone including the RB maintained Lozenge and sky camo on their upper and lower surfaces -- the red (or scheme of choice) would then be a callsign on lateral surfaces that would scare the shit out of dogfighters. Lozenge is also a kickass camo pattern and great material which was why it was kept throughout the war.)

Fair, but a big part of development is taking risks and expanding horizons and inspiring the next step. That said, the Shuttle's development was indeed something of a subsidized irl James Bond film in the words of a couple physicists I know who were also tenured at the time it was announced. But who's to say at what time and place will be best to start investing in the pursuit of "dignified" space travel again?
