EVERY drum of electrical cable is sold in imperial and your electrical codes are written for imperial calculations. Every single run length is organised in imperial. Your electricians wouldnt know a single metric measurement.

Same with plasterboard fitters... carpenters... plumbers

I dispute your claim.

Construction is the last place where metric will take over.
>>
Bullshit cm is not more accurate. Metric is divisible by 5 & 2. Inch and pound is divisible by 2, 3, 4 & 6. This becomes important in machining. I can set a lathe to 1/128 th inch the metric equivalent is a shit ton of microns. French people are stupid and count to ten on their finger tips. Viva le metric! The Sumerians counted finger bones excluding the thumb, which allows complex calculations with only your fingers to keep score.

eurofags love metric because it makes conversions easier. But when you think about how little you actualy use conversions in your everyday life you realise that base 10 doesnt make things much easier.

What does make things easier is smaller, more easily dividable numbers. So imperial system beats out metric for all nonscientific everyday tasks like carpentry, tailoring, etc..

As a construction worker from a fully metric country... metric is far superior. Every thing is in mm.

Doors are 600, 700 or 800 wide. Ceilings are generally 2400. Power sockets are 150 seperated from AV. Walls are 110mm when you put them on a 90 stud.

And when you pull out your tape measure everything is marked in 10mm & 1000mm (1m) increments. Out to 8m... or 12 if you get the fatmax

Its so intuitive

>>
>>727285103
Technically the US switched to metric in the 70s. Like Britain it was intended to be used side by side with standard measurements while society adjusted to it. So what happened? The US auto industry. They have refused to switch over, and until they do standard will be the commn everyday system. Why should citizens bother learning a metric if they don't work in some specialized field that does use it?

Speaking of which, I'm a machinist. I use both. All my life though I used standard, and that's how my brain approaches measuring shit. I can use metric just fine, but my brain simply does not automatically go into metric mode and think in it, and probably never will.

But at least we committed and crossed that bridge. Your inaction means another generation has gone to waste before the inevitable...
>>
>>727285391
Metric makes sense in a mathematical context. Imperial units are based on things you can relate to.

For example, in degrees F you know 0 is really damn cold and 100 is really damn hot. You won't really deal with too much warmer or colder than that depending where you live, but it's temperatures based on what you'll actually feel.

Degrees C for example are based on water freezing and boiling. Who cares? You're not water and don't relate to it.

This is why Imperial units are better.

I don't see how they are wasted. It really doesn't matter if the average dipshits measure their beer in ounces or liters. It's not going to save the world for them to switch. If you work in a technical or scientific field it does matter, and you will learn and use metric regardless of what the yokels think of it.

But defending / delaying introduction of the better system on behalf of yokels measuring beer in ounces is the height of crazy.

Just grow some balls and commit already.
>>
>>727298413
It matters because ounces is a weight measurement and litres is a volume measurement.

A litre of any liquid is the same volume.
An ounce of beer and an ounce of water are not the same amount of liquid.

A litre of water will be the same on the moon, imagine an ounce of beer on the moon.
How can your astronauts even drink water measured in ounces when they are in weightlessness?

>>727288740
There is some truth to this, but it might come as much from how we are taught than what measure we use. I can do typographical work only in points and picas (a duodecimal system that allows adjustments by 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 24 … 72) and for the life of me can't figure out why page layout programs prefer inches divided into tenths.
>>
>>727285103
US here.
Imperial measurements are fucking retarded.

We need to switch to Metric, but it won't happen anytime soon...
>>
>>727303579
Converting is common when dividing a larger container into multiple smaller containers.
This is an especially common occurance in regards to liquids.

I like how you ignore the part about your measurement system being so retarded it's makes you less capable than the average 12 year old around the world though.
>>
>>727297272
The irony of your statement is that we deal with a clearly less simplistic system all the time and get by just fine. Which must mean the lazy and stupid people are fags using the metric system.
>>

>"saved the world"
Keep telling yourselves that. We'd be much better off if Germany won the war
>>
>>727288740
Annndd, why are we using 1/128 in, anyway, when we could all just be using a nice rounded number?
Why does the measurement EVEN exist of 1/128 inch? It could easily have been a 195 or 200 micron measurement.
It's 1/128... BECAUSE of the divisibility of inches, NOT in spite of it.

You make that statement, thinking 1/128 is a NATURAL measurement to come by. It's NOT.
>t. An American
Imperial Measures are fucking retarded
>>
>>727303936
You'll never end up with a whole number when putting into a smaller unit why would you even convert like that it's only more math to do. Need to put it into two different containers take 1.86 pints out. Need to put it in 6 different containers take 0.62 pints out. But you will never get a whole number. Retard.

>>

tfw the pound by definition is now based off the kilogram anyway
>>
>>727304539
You won't get a whole number because your units are not divisible into each other evenly.

You're acknowledging the problem, yet defending this impractical system.

Regardless of an even number or not though, you still couldn't tell me how many full cups you would get within 5 seconds.
A child could do that using metric
>>
>>727304670
I feel one of the biggest reasons we (US) haven't switched is b/c of the cost of Oil being based off $/Gallon

You measurement system is the real fuck up when it comes to decimal points. And you think just because you have units of ten so you can move it over makes it any better. So what's half of 1.760216 liters?
>>
In mexico is normal to use metric and imperial units, one exemple is the imported cars from united states with galon and mph units.

I remember an embarrassing moment in 9th Grade, tbh.
Had no fucking idea how many cups were in a gallon. Or maybe it was ounces. IDK.

The system is gay as hell, tho.
None of it makes sense.

I support Metric all the way. mL is so much better.
>>
>>727302254
The original point is that they don't matter. Our continued reliance on standard units is not for their benefit. It is for the benefit of the auto industry. The auto industry is literally what has held back universal adoption of the metric system, and it seems that it will continue to for the foreseeable future, because it is deemed to costly to make the switch, no matter how retarded you think it is. Their profits > your opinion
>>
>>727305730
>using imperial measurement to answer
It's 1.86 pints the same as half 3.72 pints. I guess a 12 year old can solve it in metric if they convert to imperial and round.
>>
>>727305677
Yes, thanks to yanqui imperialism. The printing industry in Mexico was supplied by the US almost entirely up until the turn of this century. Now we have a mixture of US and ISO supplies. We now trim out in both systems but stationery still tends to be 8½"x11" and (for the lawyers) 8½"x11".
>>

Still defending your nonsense numbers.

Metric is used at universities and on the scientific field.

Just screwed up for the masses that have to go thought ounces, pounds and other weird stuff instead of plain kilos, liters and meters that anyone in the western civilization would understand.

10 is divisible only by 1, 2, 5, and 10.
12 is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
Look up the dozenalism movement.

Celsius is as arbitrary of a scale as Fahrenheit because neither of them are absolute scales. Kelvin and Rankine are absolute scales. So 100 degrees between water freezing and boiling is just as valid as 180 degrees, except 180 has more granularity and is a more division-friendly number in general.
>>
>>727307147
Or half a liter. That was more common before the craft beer fad hit. Now publicans can serve 3% less at the same price.

And that, I suspect, is why the liquor industry in the US was so quick to adopt the metric system. What they call "a fifth" [of a gallon] is really 750ml or even 70cl nowadays. Selling less for more is the MuriKKKan way.
>>
>>727307357
At least use metric for cooking. Cups? Almost as bad as our stones measurement.
>>
>>727307444

Plus, in fahrenheit, 0 feels cold and 100 feels hot. It's a subjective scale for subjective creatures to use.

If you need mechanical accuracy, use C. Or K. But bitching about F is silly.

>12 is divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.
One nicety that is being lost in the field of graphic design due to decimalilzation is in the mixing of typographic sizes. When you work exclusively with the traditional duodecimal sizes, you get aesthetically pleasing results; when you don't, you don't.

Try it at home and see. Stick to whole point-sizes for text from 8pt up to 12pt and the display sizes of 14pt, 18pt, 24pt, 30pt, 36pt, 48pt, and 60pt. You'll get ideal proportions everywhere.

However, when it comes to something like cooking and you need to make a recipe for four serve a party of twenty, metric is the only way to go.

The U.S. was actually going to adopt the Metric system, and then WWII happened.

European industrial capacity was practically destroyed, with the U.S. being one of the only countries that could fill their needs.

>No time to stop all production and convert to the metric system.
>>
>>727307829
0 °C and 100 °C is because water was chosen as the standard.
0 °F was chosen as a set point in 1724 because it's the temperature at which a solution of ammonium chloride, ice and water stabilizes. The freezing point of water was defined to be 32° F and water just happens to boil at around 212° F.
The scale was later revised by discarding the 0° F set point and defining the freezing point of water to be exactly 32° F, and boiling point to be exactly 180° beyond that (32 + 180 = 212).
