When I heard that part of the training included being submerged in ice cold water for extended periods I changed my sights to army/af.

Then in college I actually did get accidentally submerged in ice water and due to delayed rescue nearly got hypothermia. It actually felt like a warm bath going in. Coming out of course was horrible, and in the 15 minute ride back naked (no emergency blankets) in the rescue boat felt like I could pass out at any time from pain.

I did, for about three weeks. Then they realised there'd been a mistake with my medical.
That disqualified me for my first choice, but I could have gone for another trade (MoS).

Maybe, looking back, I should have. But at the time, I was fucking crushed. I'd lost 20lbs to get into shape, and while I wasn't outstandingly fit, I met the requirements, which was a huge improvement from where I started. I ended up in hospital twice with training injuries too. And after all that, to be told my hearing was just below the required threshold... Well, I couldn't bring myself, after all that, to settle for a second choice. As pathetic as it may sound, I just wanted to go home and stuff my face with things the PTI would disapprove of.

Yes, but that is so much easier to see in a country that relies on a conscript army and is under the threat of actually needing it. Conscription in a country that probably will not have to use its entire population for a war effort (e.g. USA) will only cause dissent, not unity. Martial arts is also great for this, btw. If you ever have a shithead kid, put them in an ultra-militaristic martial art (kendo/kumdo, naginatado, traditionally-run judo) 3-5 days per week. Way cheaper than military school, they can go into it as kids, plus they'll actually want to do it. Rowing and sailing are also very militaristic sports that can instill discipline btw, even though they don't seem like it. They are also surprisingly affordable.

It's a matter of how you do your conscription. Third-world dictators will often spend all their budget on military equipment and conscript their entire population in the manner you describe at the expense of developing infrastructure, schools, healthcare, etc. That breeds the fun combination of resentment, tribalism, and lots of people with guns who are trained in nothing else.

On the other hand, stable countries with mandatory service will either require only short terms like 2 years if not deferred, or a longer reserve requirement, or a bare minimum professional/militia/deferment mix like in Switzerland, which the latter manages despite everybody hating each other.

On one hand, every grunt at the lowest level of the command structure watches the decisions that the leadership makes and thinks that he could do it better, not realizing that the leadership has many other things to worry about and can't always dedicate the same amount of time to think about these things as everyone else. Even if you think the guy above you is retarded, you should still follow his orders, simply because he might be seeing something that you're not, or acting on privileged info you don't have.

On the other hand, you're pretty much guaranteed to run into a bad leader at least a few times in the military. There will be one time or another where your leader will deliberately fuck you and there's nothing you can do about it. It's just about whether or not you become resentful. You better have a supple anus, because your command is gonna be fucking it a lot and if you tighten up it's just gonna be worse for you.

To be a varsity coxswain (which I wasn't except for coaching purposes) we had to learn and be tested on a full manual on how to deal with falling into ice water or at night, how to jump yourself back onto a boat or floating object (submerge to your neck first to maximize the boost from buoyancy), what to do if caught in the wake of a passing freighter or barge, what to do if caught against the propeller blade grating, what to do if pushed against a zero-visibility muddy river bottom, how to re-orient yourself underwater at night, how to maximize rescue time, basic outboard motor issues, etc etc.

Oh, we also had to know how to drive a boat, but they presumed that already when we took the test.

I have a similar situation, but much more cushy. I joined at 18 as a 12b combat engineer, and went to my unit right as they were returning from NTC in preparation to go to Afghanistan. The local VA in my town is full of guys pretty much exactly like you, who stayed in the army for 10 years or more thinking that it would take care of them when they couldn't take care of themselves anymore, cause that's what they tell you. I was only in for a little under 2 years, but my entire experience with the Army was being told one thing and then having to quickly learn how it really happens on the fly.
