By being better. It's a good beer, for sure, and it has a place in history for helping to reestablish craft brewing in the US. But it's not the best in any way: it's not the best craft brew, not the best PA, and it's not even the best of either in northern CA.
>>
>>727031613
yeah certain beers might beat it in some areas but overall if you had to pick a beer for an unknown context and including price and everything its hard to beat.

Either in Not cal? Never been there I see. There's over 100 breweries it's infested with everything from pure shit to good beer. Study up. Sierra Nevada is no longer craft. It's mass produced. And its pretty good in light of that. Sculpin. Piny the Elder. There are still great crafts here

/This. The most underrated beer from Sweden.
Got a bad rep because of it's strong alcohol taste, but that's just the first sip or two.
Love it, as far as strong lagers go it's a 8/10.
It has become a freaking meme here about it being the worst..

How about a nice saison? Or sour gose? Im personally a stout/porter guy. You can continue to think the supersaturation of shitty IPAs in the craft beer market is a good thing, its a shit beer thats brewed with a fucked batch cause you can literally stuff shit in it and someone is going to think its a good beer.

I like variety and seasonal beer drinking. Ever tried having a nice porter or stout in 100 degree weather? The shitty ones will go away when no one drinks them a second time and we'll be left with the goods. Saying IPA is shit is just saying you're too lazy to find a good one. And I'm not saying there aren't shit ones I've had too many. Lots of IPAs have been around a long time
>>
>>727032933
THIS. Nothing beats Sculpin for me. Someone that thinks Sierra Nevada is the best hasn't tried many beers. It's not that Sierra Nevada is bad, but it is nothing special compared to many craft breweries.
>>
>>727034070
Well seeing as to how where I live is relatively cold year around I can't say that I do that often. But on vacation, yes I have actually had quite a few porters that bode well on a warmer/hot day. So there's that. Claiming that you liking IPAs makes you a seasonal beer drinker just makes me lul.
>>
>>727034170
Yup. It's because Sierra Nevada is no longer a craft beer. It's mass produced. Just like blue moon. Also Lagunitas has been killing it lately.
>>
>>727034254
I'm actually in central cal. We get shit weather here. Went to school up there. I miss that shit.
>>
>>727034320
No, not just like Blue Moon. Sierra Nevada is still made by the original producers. Blue Moon is owned by Budweiser, even Ballest Point is owned by Corona now hence the new fruit flavors

>>
>>727034787

>>
>>727035218
Yeah. I'll admit this town is a year or so behind with what's on tap. And also I did see the point about over saturation as it makes it tough for a bar to stock heavy beers now. There's 8 IPAs on tap everywhere
>>

Did you read what I said?
>there are better beers in NoCal
>better PAs
>better craft beers

Yeah, CA has a lot of brewers. Sierra Nevada is good, not great by today's standards, but basically started the craft brewing revival of the 1980s.

>Sierra Nevada is no longer craft.
Yes it is, by definition. It is not a macro brew. They use traditional brewing methods. They started on rigged brewing equipment in the 80s, and classed it up since. But they are nowhere near the mechanized swill that preceded them, in quality or method.

I lived in the SF area for 13 years, I know my CA beer. I'm a brewer in Portland OR, I know my beer in general.

>>
>>727036427
That is simply not true anymore. As a scandinavian, having lived in both Belgium and Germany, i would still say american beer is heavily underrated. The mass produced lagers are shit, but there are so many great american microbreweries(and big breweries making craft beer).

One example is this:
>>727036701
Really good Belgian style saison, way better than most of the Belgian saisons.Yes, Belgium and Germany have the culture, but american breweries are often making better versions of European beer styles.
>>
>>727036986
You bet, craft beers really going off here.

I drink Guinness like water so I've been buying this hipster shit beer to try and slow down my rate of consumption. Unfortunately I developed a taste for this IPA shit and now I can get comfortably toasted on just about any hipster swill, as long as it's not a fucking wheat beer. Wheat beer is fucking awful and if you like wheat beer you are a fucking awful person.
>>
>>727036427
Found the salty eurofag. Sorry, cuck, the US has better beer than all your countries combined. (Okay, maybe Belgian beers can compete on an individual level, but the quality and variety in the US are unmatched in a general sense).

Ok then Mr beer... does a brew not change flavor And lose character when brewed in large quantities? If so, you're the first brew master to tell me that the quality remains through mass production. >>
>>727039315

IPAs are delicious, but they are all almost identical - most are indistinguishable and the rest insignificantly so. you obviously have never had an ipa... ok maybe just one... because the second one you cracked you woulda noticed a difference. the most annoying part of ipas is trial and error finding the ones that actually taste good to you. I've sampled dozens of ipa's yet am only partial to a handful of em. literally have only found 4 or 5 that I could actually drink like a normal/casual drink

I just recently discovered I prefer ipa's with an ibu of about 60, but this last one I got was pungent and lingering for a beer with just 60ibu .. stuff tasted like 70 or higher

I'm nearly in the same boat. I think because IPAs are all generally delicious everyone wants to drink it we all develop a finer taste for it. Just like music genres. You may like metal in general but you start listening more and realize that you're into like thrash or speed metal. And from there you get into favorite bands favorite albums... etc. It's just a rabbit hole and since money is involved everyone and their mom has a micro brewery with an "amazing, local, hop-fuled, craft IPA"

It can, but it does not by necessity. There are some general shifts in focus at different quantities of output. A pilot setup allows for creativity and experimentation. Going from a 2bbl setup to a 50 bbl setup makes it worthwhile to save a bit on fine-tuning and efficiency. But anything past that, up to macro brewing and a conscious decision to reduce quality to make a buck... it's all pretty much the same. There's scaling up, and there's mass production and mechanization.

This is probably the most solid statement about the current state of beer.

Honestly, I think Sierra Nevada was a great craft brewer for the time. In the 80s and 90s, there was little competition. They've stayed pretty true to their roots, and expanded in a way that maintained their standards (I've seen their facilities before and after they went national, and their process did not change to macro brewing).

The main difference, and what you are probably noticing, is that there is a ton of competition now. There are 923451243 pale ales out there in the US, and many of them are better. So the one-time king of pale ales in the US is now run-of-the-mill. People expect more out of a craft beer, and most of their beers just don't hold up.

FYI, the following are all the same, over the last 25 years for Sierra Nevada PA:
>ABV
>OG & FG
>grain bill
>hop bill & IBUs
>source: I have a bottle from the early 90s sitting on my shelf, and the internet.

At first I thought maybe you were talking out your ass . Now I see you're riding Sierra Nevada dick. I get that they upscaled. Like you I've seen it. I went to Chico in the 90s. I may have clouded nostalgia of those days of their brews and also differing opinion of what is a craft beer. To me, they've graduated into the world of this new beer market and will soon be Sam Adams Jr.

>Now I see you're riding Sierra Nevada dick.
Except I repeatedly say they are average. And if there had been half the options in the 1980s as there are now, Sierra Nevada would never have been considered to be a great brewery.

>differing opinion of what is a craft beer
Craft beer has a specific definition. Your opinion on what it is is irrelevant.

>To me, they've graduated into the world of this new beer market and will soon be Sam Adams Jr.
They are basically two sides of the same thing, and have been all along. They are/were generally palatable craft beers (Boston Beer Co. now falls outside of the craft beer definition) that by today's standards are mid-range at best. They are generally responsible for the revival of craft beer, and due to their timing, they became hugely popular. If Sierra Nevada keeps growing, they may let their process change and the quality fall to keep up with demand. If they do that, they become a macrobrewer.

To reiterate:
>I think SN is an average brewery
>I never buy SN PA because there are hundreds of better PAs available to me
>SN is a historically important brewery
>SN has not seen any significant change in their operations or quality over decades
>there are just much better brewers out there now.
