Debian for general usage and servers.

Ubuntu if you are new and you're learning.

Gentoo for if you're building some super optimized embedded device.

I personally haven't used Ubuntu on my machine in a long time after I switched to Debian. That said, we use ubuntu at work as our "default" distro for everything because its a stable release and you can generally google your way out of most problems.

I've never used mint so I can't really comment on it.

Depend of the PC, for exemple:
NewLaptop - Debian, Fedora, OpenSuse, Ubuntu or Mint.
2 Years old Laptop - Debian, Fedora, Xubuntu.
New Netbook - same as Newlaptop
Old Netbook - Lubuntu and Puppy Linux
Servers: Debian, Gentoo or Fedora.

Its important that you test all distros, its funny and educational

You're right.
If he's really new and just switching from Windows I would probably recommend Ubuntu with Gnome or xfce, or anything but Unity.
>>
>>726840535
I disagree. Go with a distro that takes a lot of manual set up. Arch or slackware imo. That way you actually learn how it works. My first distro was slackware and it was definitely a learning experience
>>
If you realy want use Linux try debian or arch.

This is basically like saying "I don't care about my privacy because I got nothing to hide" in a way but I still understand. As I said, Ubuntu with Gnome or xfce is probably the best choice for a full beginner.

If you're using Linux and you have no understanding of what happens behind the scenes, it's going to be a nightmare for you when something inevitably breaks. Because in Linux, something will go wrong and you have to learn how to fix it.

This. The ONLY version of Linux remotely worth using is Linux Mint only because it closely resembles Windows and isn't bad because it comes with a bunch of software installed already.

But good luck trying to be productive on Linux when something comes up outside of the UI. You basically NEED to constantly look up "how do I do this" on google and then paste some 10 line shell script into the terminal and hope it works without breaking things in unforeseen ways.
