I replaced by '96 pickup with 2014 Tacoma and I was going to get a stick but the shifter was tiny. It didn't even feel good to shift it so I just bought the automatic. Only downside, no excuse not to let women drive it. When you have a stick you just say "sorry honey it's a stick" and they're done.

Yeah, my second clutch is going out but it's been a decade. Most of them kill 1-3 transmissions before switching to an automatic because manuals "don't last as long."

I just learned how to drive stick after taking ownership of an old family truck.

It's ass.

It's doubly ass because I live in a crowded city, meaning plenty of stop-and-go traffic. I just want to get from point A to point B, which enough of a hassle on its own. Making me do a job a computer does better while I get there is just salt in the wound.

I had to teach my neighbor's daughter how to drive a stick. She got a car with a stick shift from her grandparents as a birthday present but nobody in her family knew how to drive one and the girl was not going to let het mom and dad sell it to get her a used car with an auto and put the rest of the money in her college fund. She asked me to teach her and her parents couldn't say no fast enough so I took her out to a huge parking lot and got her idling around the place in first. After that shifting an braking were a breeze. I wish I didn't have to wait 2 years till she's old enough to give me that blowjob she promised.

Meh. I'm a shifty.

AT are *far* quicker off the line vs a manual trans.

It's more fun, and I wouldn't assume it makes anyone feel more superior. It's more about the old GT Grand Touring idealogy of loving to row gears on windy backcountry roads.

In a drag straight line, an automatic will dust a manual. So it's not about racing, it's about the traditional enjoyment of controlling the car, and feeling more intiimately connected.

In fact, it's likely that the manual transmission is one of the most highly integrated human - machine experiences.

It's just super fun.

There's no reason to drive manual.
Modern automatic transmissions are easier to maintain, more reliable, more efficient, and if you're really so adamant on believing the myths stating otherwise there is still semi-automatic transmissions that are essentially electronically controlled manual transmissions.
There's no reasonable reason to use a stick shift these days other than for nostalgia.
>>
>>726764451

No, it's really just a reaction after a while. It takes as much thought as snapping your fingers. Also, considering how distracted everyone is these days and all the multitasking everyone is so into it's a nice change of pace to have yourself more fully engaged in such an important task. If your right had has a shifter in it it doesn't have an iphone in it.

>>726754850
Eh, even people who "should know better" can be surprisingly dangerous because they overestimate their skills. I have a friend that's a mechanic and I lent him my car for a good long while since his was royally fucked. It's an old car with a very heavy cable clutch that was nearing the end of its life. He insisted on "matching revs" and "shifting without the clutch" in the interim until we finally got around to replacing the cable, clutch, throwout bearing, et al. Now I have a brand new clutch but a gearbox w/ practically no synchronizers on the 1/2 fork, plus he went through *three* pedal assemblies somehow. At any rate now I have to double clutch all the time. (Plus the replacement clutch really didn't do much to alleviate the fact that it's cable driven and still heavy as balls.) So now I'm looking at a hydraulic conversion plus a full transmission rebuild.

So yeah, in my experience, people who think they're "matching revs perfectly" tend to actually do the most damage. I'm sorry, but no human is as good, or as consistent, as a finely engineered machine.
>>
>>726752081

How would it provide any benefit? I've never had any issues during winter. On my new car I barely ever even need to use 4x4 since it has that weird 4-disk brake system that automatically steers your car straight if it detects swerving.
There's also winter tires if you're really having issues.

I'll take my Xi3's on an autotragic FWD over a 6-speed AWD on any all-seasons or an 4x4 on all-terrains any day of the week. Sure, if I have shitty tires it's nice to be able to pick 2nd gear to get moving on a slope... but not having shitty tires is a far easier solution.

I regularly fall over if I try to chew gum while walking, it's unrealistic to expect the human brain to process more than one task at a time.

There's a good reason that 97% of car accidents are the direct result of someone having to painstakingly adjust gear manually, which can take upto 20 seconds staring at the stick instead of the road.

Driving Auto isn't as fun but at least I'm not condoning murder like you are.
>>
>>726765578

Spoken like a guy who hasn't driven stick. When your car is going 30mph and your engine is turning at 2300 lets say, when you let off the gas your wheels will still be turning at the speed the engine forces upon it as it slows. This keeps the wheels turning at the correct speed for your actual speed. When you let off the gas with an auto the car essentially starts freewheeling, to an extent. This allows your wheels to start spinning at a speed different than that which you are moving if anything should allow such a thing to happen. Such as hitting the brakes. Hit the brakes in a stick and the engine reacts as well, once again locking the speed.

But hey, without actually experiencing this it's quite difficult to imagine the benefits, but they do exist.

Also, if you do happen to get stuck you can rock the car better to get out with a stick than with an auto.

There's also the option of starting in 2nd to lower the torque to the wheels, making you less likely to lose traction.

OK, fingers are tired, this post is over.

It's RWD and I've never had issues going uphill on icy roads or getting stuck at intersections even when not in 4x4.

Jesus this opens a can of worms. My first car was an old buick four banger. Decent, cheap, get-to-work car to learn to drive in. Kind of wanted to learn manual but just try and get someone to use theirs to. Decided I would get one for my second car, planned on selling it shortly and getting a loan on a nicer one. Long story short I'm one of those wretches. I will never own another automatic if I can help it. Fuck me silly but I just won't.

Uhhhh it's 2017 and cars have aggressive lockup torque converter program. Some cars only release the lockup TCC for idling and starting off, the rest of the time there is a direct mechanical connection, like a manual.

>Plus there is still more parasitic powertrain loss with auto, always will be

If both the manual and automatic were both 100% efficient...the automatic would still be better.

The automatic can shift perfectly, every single time, and I mean that in the most literal sense. There's not a human alive that can make the same claim, and, being controlled by a human, the manual can therefore not shift optimally to maintain power or efficiency.

At BEST, you could say that a semi-automatic (which is essentially a traditional manual with a computer handling the actual shifting) "clutchless manual" is better than an automatic, but that's a far cry from the traditional stick.

>>726766509
>More gears does not mean more efficient.

Yes, it does. The engine's own efficiency and power bands trump the additional losses in an automatic's torque converter. Especially if, as in a semi-automatic, you ditch the converter in favor of a computer-controlled clutch.

Case in point? F1. Semi-automatic clutches. Higher efficiency than with a fluid-coupled automatic, but much better shifting than a human could ever manage. And decidedly not a stick.

>The automatic cannot shift perfectly every single time.

I meant purely from a mechanical standpoint. Obviously it cannot predict what gear you will need to be in a second or so down the line, but no human could ever hope to go from gear to gear as fast as an automatic can. A cursory Googling will show that the average automatic can shift in around 100ms, over twice as fast as the fastest human can. The semi-autos in the Veyron and a couple of other cars can shift in EIGHT MILLISECONDS.

I agree that a manual is better than an automatic in terms of performance on the track, but, at the same time, a manual is inferior to a semi-automatic in that context.

This is objectively wrong. Driving a stick forces you to be more engaged with the vehicle and whats going on around you.

You must constantly be aware of the gear you are in, and change gears according to the circumstance; present and future.

In an automatic you do not have to do these things, so you are more likely to play with the infotainment system or your phone.

>>
>>726767575
>Yes, it does. The engine's own efficiency and power bands trump the additional losses in an automatic's torque converter
No it doesn't, not even close, the reason a fluid flywheel transmission needs a cooler is because of the heat it produces, that heat is drive energy converted into heat via friction and even the best of them are very inefficient when they're not locked which is every time you're accelerating.

>same cars(one aut and one stick)
>same track
>same skilled driver (if the driver is your average driver and not a drag racer)

Auto will win, the control of the computers is just better and faster than the average human brain.

Most drag racers run high idle torque converters(which are in automatics, meaning no clutch) and sequential transmissions (up shift/down shift are the only inputs and is basically as automatic as you can get without being automatic) 1/4 mile drag races are over too quick for most brains to register H patterns. And I can guarantee you that if drag racers could use automatics, they would. They're faster (if you can set revs) and they're more consistent.

...which has nothing to do with how many gears it has. You posited that more gears was either not advantageous or a disadvantage, nothing to do with the torque converter.

Again, on a track, where you're constantly shifting, the loss through the fluid is problematic. Even then, you're better off with a semi-auto.

On the road, where there's plenty of cruising involved (and where most the fags going "hurr durr manual is king" are driving) with the converter is locked, it isn't.

>>726775258

You have absolutely no idea how ridiculously fast an 8ms shift is, do you? Put it this way:

Can you shift 5 times in one second? Maybe, just barely, under ideal conditions, with the car is OFF, and you're one of the best drivers in the world. MAYBE. Now how about 10 times. Now how about 100 times. Because, even if you were fast enough to shift in a HUNDREDTH of a second...you're still slower than the Veyron's computer.

Fact is, even professional drivers can't match the shift time most consumer-level automatic transmissions, much less the very best performance semi-autos.
