reading dune right now OP! deffs already becoming one of my favorite books - beautiful writing, amazing description of well-crafted verbal/nonverbal communication

besides that, definitely Catch-22: the absurdity is so well done, though I failed to finish the book like 3 times before I finally managed to get ahold of it correctly

If anything, the Fremen would be Israelis.

i am in agreement with that

after finishing that i was like so fucking pumped that there was soooooo many more books to continue to read like genuinely more excited than i'd been in a while

i read through Great Hunt pretty fast feeling "meh" the whole time, but kept thinking it would get better, maybe like a settup for the next book

i only made it about halfway through Dragon Reborn before just giving up on it altogether

that was about a year ago now and i haven't even considered going back to it. kind of depressing honestly. i'm getting the itch again so i might just reread LOTR like a basic bitch

King Rat is the odd one out in terms of characters and continuation, but I think is the best in the overall theme of the series regarding the East and the West interacting and their changing political and economic fortunes.

Sucks that Clavell died before he could finish the series. He had one in 70's Japan called 'Nippon' and modern day 'China' planned.

Grateful for what we got though.

Well you've got some hell of a patience. I got to about 1/3 before I decided to quit. I do love how the language is rich and complex, how each sentence is crafted to be unique and interesting, makes it very immersive. But the voluntarily boring and empty subject matter was too much. IMO, Dickens has the same power but he chooses actually interesting subjects, see A Tale of Two Cities.

I just had the complete ebook and I agree. I loved Eye of The World, especially the climax at the end. The Great Hunt was definitely a fast read, but at first in a thrilling way, until it got to the part with the women. The action slowed down after that, and the ending fell flat of what I expected. Then I started reading Dragon Reborn (after a brief stint of disappointment/anger over TGH ending). I made it halfway through Dragon Reborn when an underlying problem began to nag at me, and that was something caused by me spoiling the later books for myself.

The relationships in the book had terrible development. Not only was the character pairing bad, but the way Jordan developed relationships (not just the romantic) was lazy and unimaginative, not to mention disturbing. So reading about characters that I cared about in pointless and insubstantive relationships that had major effects on the plot and choices really pissed me off. It's like there was no valid motivation or reason for anything anyone did, and that eventually made every character seem lifeless and unmotivated. then he explained it all away with the overlying theme of prophecy and predestination.

SPOILER: I never like relationships with huge age gaps, and Lan and Nynaeve suddenly being a thing came literally out of nowhere. Moiraine and Thom? Non-existent throughout the book. These were poorly developed and matched pairs that were used to justify major character decision and actions that affected the story. So I knew from reading summaries that this was going to be weak, and I picked it up the very first time when I read EoTW and TGH, and having Lan-Nynaeve forced so terribly. The relationships that could have actually been well development and led to unique and meaningful character interactions never happened the way I hoped (RIP Lan-moiraine, Egwene-Perrin). overall, Jordan doesn't understand how human interaction works, and it made everything hard to stomach.

ahhhhhh dude yes, Lan and Nyneave is exactly the thing that planted the seed of my complete and utter loss of interest and lack of motivation to continue with the series

like seriously what the fuck?

it felt like a forced relationship on a reality TV show where even though you know that whole show is fake, you're still willing to believe it cause it's "reality"... but then that particular relationship is soooo painfully forced that you can't overlook it at all. it sticks out like a sore thumb of obvious fakeness within a show that you're willing to believe is somewhat real

damn i totally forgot about that since, as i said, it's been about a year since i put it down

I think it's more that he refuses to turn away from the visceral that has kept him at the fringes of any genre, even horror. However, that's a good thing because Barker is Barker. There is no comparison to his brand of the dark fantastic. He'd not ashamed of horror but his writing is much more than the usual horror elements. He's done amazing things with creating legitimate multidimensional characters of the strange, horrific, and abominous . He's one of a kind, for sure.

My favorite is also a bit of a guilty pleasure, Rant by Chuck Palahniuk.
He's pure cynical teenage angst and edge, and his new books are garbage, but I always come back to this book. I think it's the disjointed structure and all of the mechanics and discussion of the
time travel
. My other, more likely to be well known, favorite is Hearts in Atlantis by King, namely the title novella. I love the world he's crafted in this short sweet story, feels like I'm there playing hearts in the sixties.

when I heard a new movie was coming out I started reading it. last time I read Dune I was 12 and I didn't put together how much of a creepy pedophile Barron Harkonnen was.
I was so innocent and dumb back then.

funny story about this
>on cruise on Royal Caribbean ship with my family when i got this book on kindle.
>legit got so hooked on the book that my dumbass would stay in the library section of the boat to read it for hours instead of going on deck and drinking with fam.
> my fucking dad asked if i wanted to get off the boat at Aruba to do excursions and do shit and I said no so i could continue to read the book
> My dad's face of disappointment as he said ok and turned away from me to leave.
>To this day i wish i fucking got off that fucking ship to be with him but decided to not be with him to read the book
But yeah this is a good read and recommend this greatly written story to you guys.
