One of the biggest misunderstandings about Islam, and one of its biggest problems, is that it is a fundamentally different deal than something like Christianity or Judaism. A lot of this comes from the rather unique life of the Prophet Mohammed.

Christianity and Judaism are, to cut a long story short, fairly bumper-sticker kind of religions. They basically dictate what god to pray to, to a lesser extent what to eat, and some general principles on how to live your life.

Mohammed conquered and ran an entire country, almost an empire. Therefore, the Quran and Islam in general is imbued with a much greater and more specific set of rules about how to run a country, how to collect taxes, how to administrate law and order, the roles of men and women, etc. Imagine the Bible, crossed with the Constitution.

This is what makes it so difficult for moderate Muslims to reconcile their religion with the very, very different legal systems of the countries they find themselves living in. If you follow Islam absolutely to the letter you end up as an iron fisted theocracy like Saudi Arabia.
