Meh, active but not really doing anything aside from a picture a week. Nordguard will never be finished and for that I'm saddened. Right now I'm on a Truegrave kick so it could be worse.

My man. I've got a fistful of dollars downloaded and I'm probably going to snuggle up with some vodka and revel in it for a couple house.

Learning one to a decent level isn't as hard as everyone makes it out to be. Once you get basic muscle memory down and you focus on getting consistently in-tune notes out it's only a matter of improving the eccentric skills like you would muscles in a workout. However I do understand your plight.

Largely. They are still a thing for certain debts. Child support, not paying fines, etc. They are also indirectly enforced in some ways (some fines you won't go to jail for, but those fine debts suspend certain rights that make it likely for you to go to jail).

It is not necessary, ever, to put people in jail for things they cannot quantifiably pay -- especially when that "necessity" is used in a severely inconsistent, adhoc manner.

We have a significant segment of the U.S. voting base that continually proves they have a inability to think things through or utilize reason to any notable degree, with a disproportionate amount of power given their notable lack of qualifications in general. I mean, we're still putting people in prison for weed, won't take much to convince the people in the last election that debtor prisons are a good idea.

There is a necessity for the law to demonstrate it is capable of meting out punishment. Otherwise it has no legitimacy.

The vast majority of Americans are in debt of some sort, and people aren't quite as idiotic as I think you think they are. What politician could run with the reinstatement of debtors prisons on the platform? It'd be approximately as politically suicidal as advocating the obliteration of social security.

The law also needs to exercise its power in a manner that won't harm its credibility. Needless punishment reduces that, especially when you punish people for not doing things they cannot logically do in the first place.

I don't think the vast majority of people are idiots. It just happens those that are have a disproportionate amount of power currently.

Well we can differ on the degree of enforcement that's strategically viable. Debt forgiveness does exist. At the same time there're deadbeats who elect not to pay their debts when they're capable of doing so and in those instances you need an enforcement mechanism that has teeth.

What precisely makes these people in the first place stupid and in the second disproportionately powerful?

The ACA is a garbage fire. Its replacement is a slightly smaller garbage fire. The system of insurance we had prior to the ACA was, you guessed it, smoldering trash.

The health industry requires deregulation, not government apportioning OR mandate (or stealth mandates, as in AHCA).

So for example the fact that in its current state, insurers don't actually compete across state lines. The system of monopoly this produces is TERRIBLE for reproducing a quality product.

Preexisting conditions should not be covered by an insurance service, that is insane. It is like calling an insurance company to buy a plan when your house is already on fire. The business model can't work if they cover preexisting conditions.

>Its replacement is a slightly smaller garbage fire.

There is no way you can logically and rationally assert that at this point, without being completely dishonest or willfully ignorant. There is no model where the current proposed plan ends up being better than the ACA. It will not happen. You would need to literally warp reality with some kind of god like power to get the current proposed law to actual work in any meaningful way as well as being *better* than the ACA.

Hell you don't even need to worry about expending the energy thinking about it, if it's too much: every single facet of the current proposed law has been tested in some form and has been met with abysmal failure. The ACA on the other hand, is largely a success (despite some governor's and senators efforts) because it was thought out and implemented with the feedback of industry experts and even the public over the course of a year.

Claiming the health industry needs deregulation is also incredibly historically ignorant, as it was deregulation that currently lead to this mess. Such claims also are basically a big red flag that you've never worked in any capacity in the health care industry. You're literally just repeating a talking point that is complete bullshit. It's a cult mantra at this point that requires you to ignore all evidence to the contrary. Insurance companies are a primo-example of some of the worst run companies modern history has to offer, in every capacity: from efficiency to ethics.

Stop with the unmitigated bullshit and actually think things through. Holy shit.

My assertion that AHCA is slightly less awful than the ACA is based on the lack of a mandate primarily. The mandate is functionally a subsidy to insurance companies. Surely if you think these companies are terrible at everything you wouldn't want to force me to give them money. And indeed I agree that health insurance companies are terribly run, which is an excellent argument for promoting competition in that industry; efficiency is not going to come about by doling out pork to awful organizations.

Ironically, I have worked in the health care industry before. That's not apropos of anything though.

The individual mandate is to force the young and healthy into the pool so that the pre existing condition clause can exist. The young and healthy need to pay into the system so that the old and the otherwise infirm can get coverage. Prices are spiraling upward, true, but they have been for decades. I think that a single payer option would probably lead to better health outcomes, as it's a pretty tried and true system at this point in plenty of first world countries.

1. those systems are obscenely bloated and are not sustainable. The NHS in the UK is in the process of failing.
2. In those countries where the system has not yet collapsed, you see demographic realities that are drastically different from those in the united states; Scandinavia, for example, does not have the ENORMOUS and persistent underclass that the states does, that would accelerate the calamity of that system
3. Canadians cross the border to get surgery here for a very good reason.

The point is that if people lack healthcare coverage they will not go in for preemptive care, which is mind numbingly cost-effective compared to repeated emergency room trips, which also result in worse care results. So if you think the government is morally obligated to care for people who are critically sick, like in the emergency room, just not insuring people with preexisting conditions does not get rid of them or not make them sick, they will still be in the healthcare system, just in a more expensive and overloaded part of the healthcare system where they will have worse outcomes.

The discussion is very simple.
You can get really awful near worthless coverage for everyone that eventually goes bankrupt.
OR you can get good coverage for the vast majority of people that gets them what they need.
Leftists only care about the number of people covered, not what the coverage does.
>>

right but the point I made is that there's no evidence that expanding medicaid as a service increases peoples' usage of preemptive care; what it actually does is get people to go to the emergency room more because they think they're covered. You can't enforce healthy decisions and forward thinking.

I would have to ignore they are largely the only politically empowered organizations that are able to care for the vast majority people at the moment. Removing the mandate is removing care, just to appease largely ignorant people's short sighted egos and greed, and ideological narratives. The real solution is to just bypass the insurance companies completely. I look forward to the day these companies are a fraction of what they are now.

I mean, the United States had some pretty abysmal healthcare outcomes compared to dollars spent in all the developed nations, and that was before you can go pointing fingers at the ACA. And it was a national embarrassment that people with preexisting conditions couldn't get coverage, because it was making unprecedented amounts of people declare medical bankruptcy. I don't think it was all so rosy. The ACA is also not doing a great job, but I think that it has in a big strokes kind of way been an improvement, increasing the risk pool. But I do still think a single payer option would be better. I'm not saying there should be no private healthcare, you can get private healthcare in the UK too, it's just opt in.

I mean, you can say this, but one of the few things that the ACA has done that can be considered wholly good in my opinion is putting regulations on policies EXACTLY BECAUSE a lot of coverage plans pre-ACA "covered" people in explicitly predatory ways, and people would still need to declare medical bankruptcy because they weren't covered the way they thought they were.

It removes coverage from people who ~do not want to pay for health insurance~ because they're making a balanced appraisal of their situation and determining that that is not a wise investment. I find your willingness to toss out that choice very short sighted. Particularly because, as mentioned, it BOLSTERS the insurance companies that you claim are disastrous. And you're right, they are, but the ACA has no way of resolving that situation. It contributes to the problem.

We didn't have a competitive system of health insurance prior to the ACA, that's why I said originally that what we had before that would be terrible.

Forcing insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions is like making fire insurance companies pay out to people that buy the insurance after their house is burning. The ACA doesn't work and insurance can't work without the ability for competition in the free market and not forcing them to take care of preexisting conditions. Otherwise it's not insurance, it's a money bank so you have to subsidize them to make up for their lost profits which is what the ACA does by forcing people to buy coverage. It's designed to fail so that leftists can blame the private insurance and swap to government controlled health care. The best model for this is Sweeden that you can opt in for more health care, but the model has only worked that well in the much smaller countries that are much less diverse in terms of culture and class.

What changes to the system make the proposed new plan by the new administration better than the one that was pre ACA, then? I agree the ACA isn't good, I think it's basically a terrible approximation of a single payer system, at the whims of insurance companies. But the alternative of leaving people not covered isn't an acceptable solution in my mind. I don't want to live in a country where people get sick and then bankrupt their entire families. We did that for awhile and it fuckin sucked.

The new one is better only because the mandate is gone. It's still not good, like I said. I don't think any of the three things we've tried are the correct option, and I know for absolute certain that single payer is not a good option because it is unsustainable elsewhere - it leads by necessity to care rationing, disincentivizes people from participating in the industry and so forth. The correct answer is liberating the market as much as physically possible. Again, there was not a free market if health care prior to the ACA.

By the way, that principle doesn't just apply to health 'insurance'. It applies to health 'care'. There's a reason the most lucrative parts of the health service industry are the extremely unregulated ones...and those are also seeing their costs decrease in meteoric form as time goes on. This is better for everyone. The instinct to say "well we need to care for everyone" is well intentioned but shortsighted.

>because they're making a balanced appraisal of their situation and determining that that is not a wise investment

That's an extremely loaded statement, considering historical data over the last 6 decades from the U.S. -- as well as basic human mannerisms. People avoid preemptive care because of costs. Excluding the elderly, there's a pretty significant cross section of illnesses and ER visits that happen because people can't or refuse to go the doctor because of costs.

> it BOLSTERS the insurance companies that you claim are disastrous.

I'm pretty sure the ACA reigns the insurance companies in multiple ways. Capped profits (still no where near they way in a previous time), forces them to cover certain illnesses, preventative care, and preexisting conditions. It's a largely superficial take on what single payer would look like. The ACA is a compromise between doing what is logically and ethically right, and not starting an outright political war between these organizations who are politically empowered (thanks to the upstanding people who represent them) and the government.

Not sure how any of that contributes to the current problem, when it really seems like the ACA is in fact winding the insurance companies down. Meanwhile the current proposed legislation...

I don't see how deregulating the market as much as possible leads us somewhere positive. Why should international corporations have the final say in the health outcomes of a nation? Deregulated healthcare seems like a pretty spooky prospect for people with pre existing conditions and the poor and working class.

Trumpcare sucks, it's just the ACA with some stuff stripped away.
It's basically as bad.
>>726185456
It's not silly to compare the two, health insurance as a business is more or less fundamentally the same as fire insurance. You pay them just in case something happens, and they make the risk calculation that on the whole people will pay them more than they would have to use to fix the people's houses that do burn down. Same with health insurance, they are betting people will pay more in premiums than they will have to use over the time they are covered. If you knew the house would be burnt down ahead of time it is a bad idea to make that bet.
The government will have some roll, but both the ACA and trumpcare are over-reaches. The smaller the government the better, trying to interfere with things like the ACA does not work and is just an entitlement program that deepens the wellfare state.

As I mentioned, people aren't more likely to seek out preemptive care when they become insured under an expansive government umbrella. We cannot enforce good decision making, it's not possible or viable.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/10/19/more-evidence-expanding-medicaid-increases-emergency-room-visits/

The ACA takes more freedom away from both the consumer and the insurance companies, while also effectively redistributing money from the consumer to the insurance companies. That is ass backwards retarded. Yes, the insurance companies now have to reckon with preexisting conditions (this is very stupid) but they also get money from perfectly healthy people for no reason (this is even stupider) so they become progressively less likely to actually fail. Indeed, this makes those companies intractable. It is a worst of all worlds solution.

Single payer is a terrible, unsustainable idea that obliterates innovation and long term health outcomes for the short term altruistic satisfaction of making sure everyone's "covered" without concern for whether they're actually healthier which, I imagine, is the objective of health care.

Such problems are notably only issues with the U.S. It's a culture and process problem. Even now some doctors will send you to the E.R. based on coverage -- because you attempt to go these primary care doctors and they will literally turn you away. I'm not exactly shocked by the findings -- more shocked that the article didn't even give a single hint about this problem in the U.S. Even more shocked they tried to attribute it to a free lunch mentality. Doing some light googling, it appears other states didn't really see the same sustained effect. And as far as I can tell, it surely isn't a problem in other countries with single payer healthcare.

>but they also get money from perfectly healthy people for no reason

Hint: It's to pay for the sick. You have risk pools, those risk pools needed to be financially seeded.

> unsustainable idea that obliterates innovation and long term health outcomes for the short term altruistic satisfaction of making sure everyone's "covered" without concern for whether they're actually healthier which

Obliterates innovation how? By making the system more efficient without needless overhead? U.S. research isn't going anywhere, with or without single payer, so I'm not sure what you could possibly be referencing.
>>
>>726188427
Regardless, the evidence shows that there's no reason to extend centralized healthcare from a cost effectiveness standpoint, at least not in the US. If you propose and execute a way to fix what you describe as a culture and process problem, then that perhaps would justify spending taxpayer money on what has so far proven to be inefficient.

I know what the purpose of ripping off the healthy is. I am telling you what the other effect of it is - it entrenches toxic and inefficient corporations. It is literally the enforcement of a bad business model upon the wallets of the taxpayer. That's insanity.

U.S. medical research outpaces that of virtually any other country, although that leadership is declining somewhat - not coincidentally since the implementation of the ACA.
https://www.urmc.rochester.edu/news/story/4233/u.s.-slipping-as-global-leader-in-medical-research.aspx

It should be obvious to you why handcuffing any industry to the government stifles innovation, though. There's no room for competition and the risk taking associated with investment is therefore disincentivized.
