Wasn't doing well in school and had two jobs, was trying to take care of my spouse at the same time. Got to the point where I just wanted insurance for him and a way to pay for school without so much debt. Walked in to recruiting office and said I just wanted a job. Went to boot camp 3 weeks later on someone else's orders, ended up with a good group of people. I don't regret it, I got exactly what I needed and it's not a hard job. Don't plan on staying after my contract, but at least it'll give me some experience.

We have conscription but Border Guard only takes volunteers, because the training is a bit rougher than normal. There are no tests or entry exams initially but they will weed out the unsuitable ones pretty quickly. So yes, that was something I wanted to do. For the sniper duty I was picked, which caused quite a bit of jealousy. Usually you can apply for special training but for some reason not this time, so others weren't even given a chance.

So I'll try again: after HS I had zero money, zero relationship with my parents. I took a chance on the military, saved enough money to survive a while, and when I got out I worked like a fucking dog to get through college and was more or less homeless at times. I mean, I worked for everything I had, but that said, the military was my first job. They fed, paid and housed me like they said they would. And they did instill certain good habits if you were willing to play along. I won't deny that it has done some good things for me. And as I said, I did meet a few really good people. So I'll dial my attitude back a little bit . . . it's probably silly to denounce an entire institution, full of hundreds of thousands of people, which does serve a necessary function.

Certainly, I respect the people who choose to go and stay in.

If I were you, I would max the pt test. If you're good at pt, nobody usually fucks with you and you even get offered better oppurtunities like Airborne school and other types of schools. I did and because of similar pictures I had very high hopes. I joined in my late 20s and I was already well versed in all aspects of life.

Dress, discipline, indoctrination, drill even the PT was fine and I could handle very well. Except joining the army was like travelling back to the 1970s. Antiquated education methods, bullshit rituals, exercises and garbage food (was a former professional chef before). The old traditions were garbage, like if your commander and sergeant and even corporal who are training you in basic all did some ridiculous hazing when they were in training too, then you need to jump through the same hoops because "reasons". It's the lesson came after the test over and over. You were supposed to fail and fail hard and learn from it. I don't and never have followed that logic. No real manuals to read only nonsense classrooms where stuff was explained honestly badly. Alot of legal stuff too.

I was told in the early days it's a game to get you in the right shape mentally and physically and worse kept trying to instill this feeling of "family" being in the military and honestly I never saw it that way, it was a job to me nothing more. My willingness only went as far as getting the task at hand done and had no interest in unit/family/brothers in arms shenanigans. Even to this day I never cared for the inspections and such. I never saw a point of making sure my bed was made so perfectly with hospital corners was going to help me in combat or even doing admin stuff like paperwork.

The rifle I was given in training was older than I was a 1979-1982 production issue, marching was boring, waiting was boring rushing and hurrying up to wait and wait some more. So much time wasted. They could of given me a nice thick manual with everything i needed to know and let me read it as much as I needed. They could of let me used the gym or outside track to run and workout even after a days of PT because I wanted to.
