muskets require you to push in the powder, the paper, and the lead ball, all while under fire of OTHER muskets.
that being said, a line of muskets is probably scarier than a line of crossbows.

so the thing about early firearms is they had very large projectiles (and those projectiles obviously flew very fast compared to any non-firearm's projectile), but they were balls rather than a more aerodynamic shape and that kinda diminishes the penetrative potential. I've never seen a period appropriate firearm compared in like a ballistics gel test or a plate test to a crossbow though so I don't really have an answer for this
