The Federal economy needs to work for regular Americans, or it will disintegrate. Your last sentence is entirely correct. But the opposite is equally true. Socialist systems are required to build foundational structures for new economies. They stop working once these are in place. Equally, free market systems only work during expansion periods. During periods of consolidation, they become structurally weak and enable corruption. Just as you challenge me to find a socialist system that works in the long term, I would ask you to find a free market system which doesn't end in corruption. Of course it corrupts - no regulation permits corruption. Corruption gives an unfair advantage. Those left behind notice the corruption winning, cross check this with the fact that no regulation means the corruption is passively endorsed, and become corrupt themselves.

Every economic system has a time for application. Adhering to one strategy as "the right one" is a lot like saying you only ever use one pedal in your car, because that is the one that makes it move / or the one that stops you crashing.

Namely through mechanization. Which will in the coming years continue to take over jobs. Reducing the number of jobs while increasing unemployment. Which would presumably snowball into such a problem that welfare will be unable to support the people.

This is merely just one issue that needs to be resolved. Ideas like "Universal Income" are one such answer. Yet I assume that that isn't a qualifying solution.
