What is objectively the best dog breed?
>>
After owning dogs for 22 years including rottweilers, shepherds, mastiffs, pitbulls and others I must say the Swedish farm dog (Svensk GĂ„rdshund).
Perfect size, extremely smart, agile and fast but also a cuddly little couch potato when at home. Healthy and long lived, very good guard/alarm dogs.
Have two of them, 9-12 years old. No problems what so ever.

no, border collies suck for those reasons, after pits and chihuahua they are the next most common dog you see at shelters bc people don't realize what their getting into with them. They just see "oh smartest dog, perfect", Rough collies are much better since they naturally know how to laze around and wait for you to play with and exercise them without complaint.

The Labrador is currently the most popular breed in the world, and there's a good reason for that. They're intelligent, loyal, easily trained, very good with children, and as working dogs they have a soft mouth, water-repellent fur, are excellent swimmers, and in an emergency will hunt for you to keep you alive and sleep curled with you for warmth.

There are dogs which are better than Labradors at specific tasks, but there's no dog which combines all the desirable qualities together with no appreciable weaknesses the way a Lab does.

It took you less than ten seconds to shit out a mindless and effortless response. How can that possibly make you proud.

You need to do some reading. A dog is a dangerous predator, and it's irresponsible to own one unless you know how they think. Dogs do not "love" you, dogs have a pack affiliation to you. It's no less complex than primate love, but it's not something you are going to instinctively understand. Dogs have an intense drive to know where they are in the pack hierarchy. You need to learn how dogs inform each other of this. If you have an aggressive dog, it means the dog is trying to assert dominance over you. This should NEVER happen. You need to start reading how dogs relate to each other, and the things you have to do to show dominance.

Trust me, showing dominance does not hurt your dog's feelings. Far from it. Your dog will be much, much happier if he knows that you're in charge and he's the submissive one in the relationship. Your dog *wants* you to dominate him.

I know, I'm thinking of buying some cesar millan book or something and start reading asap

I just don't know how to show dominance when he gets to intimidate me

That's an excellent idea. For now, the most important thing for you to know is that you can permanently break a dog's mind through inconsistent reward and punishment. Built right into the structure of every dog's brain is the need to conform to expected standards. It's the heart of doggy behaviour in the pack. The dog will do ANYTHING, up to and including enduring pain and death, to do what the pack expects him to do. The problem is if you are inconsistent in whether a given behaviour is rewarded as good or punished as bad, it breaks this part of the dog's brain. At this point, the dog can no longer be trained and has become a dangerous rogue whose behaviour is random. The dog is emotionally disturbed and must be destroyed.

I'm doing pretty alright untill now, I got him 2 days ago. I reward him and punish him just right I think, but when other "broken" dogs come, mostly dogs bigger than him or ones that just can't get a hold of themselves, he just flips off

Any advice? The ideal action to take would be to make him submit, preferably making him go belly up on the ground right?

Would can I manage this in the moment if he's about to bite me? Never happened though, just a few minutes ago I pulled the leash upwards and gave him a few kicks and he calmed down, but he looked at me and I know he senses the fear in me.

I don't wanna fuck up in the beginning because first impressions are important, any advice before I buy the book, and on what book to buy?

Thanks for the help so far

It's almost never necessary to physically punish a dog. Their instinct is to watch you constantly to see how you're reacting to what they're doing. As long as you have some way of showing the dog that you're either pleased or displeased, it will learn without any real effort on your part.

For now, you should always carry doggy treats with you, small ones. Any time the dog does something good -- comes when you call, stops when you say 'no' and so on -- you give him a treat. And it has to be *right away*. They have short memories, and you don't want to confuse them. Likewise, when the dog does something you don't like, so "no" firmly. You don't need to shout or yell. If the dog gets aggressive and is still small, you can gently push the dog over on its back and hold him by his chest until he stops struggling. This shows dominance.

You should also avoid giving scraps to a begging dog. In the pack, the dominant dog eats first, then the beta dog, then the more submissive dogs, and so on. You should eat first, and the dog should not be begging. When the dog begs and is given food, you're encouraging dominance in the dog. The dog should quietly ignore you eating, and THEN the dog should get fed.

I can literally feel her in my mouth even if I'm turned around.
Its fucking annoying as shit.

Also, when told go gtfo, it would come around the corner like 5 times until you literally jump up and start going towards her...then it knows it dun goofd..

Well I guess I'm fucking up already. He only reacts to my corrections once I kick him with enough force, otherwise he just ignores me. He is full of testoesterone (gonna be castrated tomorrow), so I thought he needed bigger stimulus.. Is this thinking wrong? He only corrects himself when I punish him hard

>You should eat first, and the dog should not be begging. When the dog begs and is given food, you're encouraging dominance in the dog. The dog should quietly ignore you eating, and THEN the dog should get fed.

I actually just did that, I started eating and making him watch, and then made him sit still so I would then give him food, I think it's a good start

And yea you're right, I'll try to have some few small treats in a way I can give them to him asap when he does something good, thank you

But I don't think you answered my main question here: What do I do when he gets aggressive? He's +/- big, big enough to rip my face off in a blink, and I can't control him

Also: should I give the leash some slack when he's encountering other dogs in order for him not to feel the tension? I find it safer to hold him tight because they can bite each other really quick, but maybe I'm fucking up?

I appreciate all the help, and would appreciate even more if you answered these questions

I'm not a professional but if you can't control him, why did you take him?
If he gets aggressive, you dominate him until he fucking submits, end of story.
If that means getting a broom handle and kicking the shit out of him, so be it.

Yeah, see this is what I meant when I wrote about "inconsistent reward/punishment." You and your girlfriend are sending mixed messages, which can seriously screw up your dog's head. People who don't understand dog behaviour have no business owning a dog.

>>725547721
NEVER kick your dog. It's completely unnecessary. Dogs by nature WANT to be good doggos. It's built right into their genetics. It's not their fault when they misbehave, it's yours. You should never tolerate any level of aggression from your dog, but physically striking your dog isn't necessary. Just the knowledge that you're displeased is enough as long as the dog understands that YOU are the dominant pack leader.

That's why for the rest of the training to work, you need to learn how dogs establish and recognize dominance with each other. I'm 100% sure that you're undermining your own training by making the dog think you're not the boss. For example, dogs should never be allowed to win a "tug of war" game. They should ALWAYS be forced to turn over a ball when they fetch it. They should never be fed first. They should never be rewarded for begging. They should never be allowed to stare you down. And any rough play should end with you physically dominating the dog and then declaring play time over.

As for the leash, the dog should be constantly looking back at you to see whether you're approving or disapproving. If the dog isn't doing this, it shows you're not dominant. Dogs have an instinct to constantly watch the pack leader to know how to react. Any pressure at all on the dog's collar should make the dog stop -- and if it doesn't, then you're not the top dog.

But even cesar millan says you should give them small kicks and pulls on the leash

Then how do I become the alpha? I'm sure I transmit the right energy, he's just stubborn as hell, also he's pretty stressed out these days and has a lot of energy

I'm sure I'm sending the right vibes, but sometimes he seems just too focused on what he's smelling or whatever

So you're telling me, even when the dog is trying to get into a fight I shouldn't touch him? What the actual fuck

"Small kicks" means light pressure with your foot, not punting. Likewise, pressure on the leash is just a cue to the dog. If you're dominant, then the dog doesn't need force, just the knowledge that you disapprove.

Aggression levels vary by breed and by individual, but all dogs will test you. That's built into their genetics too. You need to constantly be reminding them that you're the pack leader. The more aggressive a dog is, the more often it will test you. As long as you give the right response every time, your dog will back down and follow your desires.

Go on YouTube and look for videos of people exercising wolves. An entire pack gets leashed to a belt on a single person, and that person goes for a run. The wolves could easily rip that person right off his (or her) feet -- but they don't, because that runner is the pack leader, and dogs will instinctively stay with the pack leader. They WANT to follow the pack leader; it's what makes a dog happy.

What I'm trying to ask is: If I do all this right and still don't get the dogs attention, how do I become the alpha to him?

>>725551123
It's the other way around. Become the alpha and everything else just happens automagically. That's how it happens in nature, and how it's intended to work. As you've been experiencing, training is difficult or even impossible unless and until your dog recognizes you as the boss of bosses.

Start with basic training. One good way to deal with aggression levels is with food. You should be able to stop a dog from eating at any time and take the food away without aggression or complaint from the dog. This shows the dog both trusts you and regards you as the alpha dog. It's a good test to see whether what you're doing is working.

Obeying commands like sit, stay, come, lie down, and so on, are a really good way to show dominance. Small treats as rewards, given consistently, should make this almost effortless. If the dog is older and has already received bad training it might take a little longer, but always remember that your dog WANTS to be good. It's your job to show him how.

I think this is the case, I guess I just have to be patient

Thanks for the tips

My pleasure, and good luck. I love doggy nature for what it is. People who think their dog "loves them" are doing a disservice to the dog and making things harder on themselves.
