Most who are religious are a victim of indoctrination, which plays on our strongest instincts and desires to be loved, taken care of, having a mother/father figure in their life. The urge to feel that everything is going to be all right. It's not fair to just call it gullibility, it goes much deeper. It's about subcinscious processes. When I was a Christian I truly believed most of what was said in the bible about what has happened and what's to come. It was only after 8 years of struggle and internal conflict that I was able to wrestle my way out of that kind of thinking.

I think the reason I made it on my own was because my parents didn't really drill it into me, it was basically just my own doing from reading the bible as a child and watching preachers on youtube and feeling a sensation of peace when I prayed sometimes. I can't imagine how hard it must be for those who are harshly indoctrinated to get out of it. For some it's probably not even possible.
