I know that sounds like the lamest excuse ever, but I come from a family where people have been in various wars, and it fucked up every single one of them pretty badly.

Just take my older cousin, he was a U.S. Marine in Iraq. He came back physically in one piece and without a scratch besides the occasional bruise, but his life spiraled into a hopeless mess of clinical depression and alcoholism. He was discharged due to mental issues, and he was never able to have a professional career as a civilian, or start a family. He shot himself in the head with a 38 revolver the day after his 30th birthday. What a shitty way to go for somebody who was an honor roll student and football state champion.

So ask me again why I never joined the military.
