Those kettles are way faster than stovetop teapots. Kettles also automatically shut down. If you boil a lot of stuff it's really amazing to have. It's definitely not a necessity.

Kettle is more efficient and fast, and it automatically turns off right after water is starting to boil hard. Plus kettle has design optimized for pouring boiling water into cup, while pouring water from typical cooking utensils for stove much more inconvenient.
