I'm just starting to paint again. First time going was a bit of a disaster. I forgot to block out my light planes and shadows so my darks weren't dark enough and my lights didn't pop.

I toned the canvas with burnt umber that I didn't dilute enough either... feelsbadman.

So just wait for it to dry and then reapply everything. Remember, your brightest points typically are actually rather dull. Even high lights are rarely bright.

I think I might do something monochromatic or limited color palette next time to really get the values in painting again. I also forgot how important core shadows are.

I need to make the underpainting with a wetter brush and draw the core shapes in blockier. With the core shadows planned a little better.


I had relatively good control over the brush, enough to do ellipses properly on the vase and candle I had in the still life.

It's been several months since I did a still life sketch in oil. I probably should do a little study sketch of that new vases I bought. I've mostly been doing my landscapes, right now I'm doing small landscape drawings to keep my feelings for them fresh and work out some problems I was having. Show work, playa.

That would require I head to the garage and photograph it. It's cold, I'm comfy, and i need the rest atm.

I will start posting once I'm starting to see improvements. I have two hours a day I'm setting aside for the studies, possibly longer sessions on weekends, but the weekends I sort of need for digital prractice.

Post them anyways regardless of if you think they are good or not. Critique is an important part of learning because others will be able to spot flaws you didn't realize were even there.

I just started back up again, no body of work atm because my painting course in college was mostly studies and a few portraits that were gifted to friends and family that wanted them.

If I'm working traditional, it's usually oil pastels or conte crayon.

Conte feels so good when you're doing figure drawing with it.


Also: gouache is one of the hardest mediums ever... I know you're technically not supposed to use it for gradiation, but found some pleasant results be reactivating the medium near the edge of a transition, giving me the rendering look a was going for.

I'd love to play with it more, but it's so damn costly.

I have a body of work, I always have something I'm working on. Except for now since I need to get some drawing done but I can't since I'm out of the colors I always need. I have never found gouache to be a difficult medium to work with. Nobody has ever told me that I can't do something like gradate or anything like that so I often just use it how I would other mediums and it works out fine.

I have some conte, just haven't gotten into my dry media in a while. Even when I'm sketching in the field I'm using ink.

I'm surprised to hear that you naturally took to gouache. Nearly everybody I know of hated the stuff, but that's probably the color theory course in college that people whine about. Which is more about time management than it is applying paint to canvas.

And I'm horribly traditional when it comes to people telling me what they want out of a medium... I could do with a bit more of my own interpretation, but tend to back away from the unknown. Too much academia.

I didn't take to gouache. I also didn't take to oil paint either. I took my first oil painting class early in college and hated it. It took a couple of years before the bug finally caught me.

I have always been fiercely independent. Some of my professors recognized that so allowed me the freedom to develop and experiment on my own. I have always been interested in what material can do, finding their furthest limitations, and allowing the material to function only as material. I think part of that really comes from the kind of painter you are. I'm definitely a mid-century East Coast Modernist, which is a tradition of exactly the attitudes and ideas that I have for my work.

I'm more of a commercial art background. I didn't like painting until I got through my figure painting course in college, then I couldn't get enough of it, but it was time to go back to drawing...

Only medium that is yet untainted by my academics is watercolor, which I really enjoy when I have the time for studies.

I used watercolor as a kind of ink. I've wanted to get back into using it as ink, but just haven't had the time. None of the mediums I use have been tainted by academia. I greatly dislike some mediums, acrylics for example, because they're just sort of dead to me.

You put acrylic down and it's just there. You know? Like, it's not an active medium. Oil you put down and it goes nuts. It bounces around, it changes, it turns, it's all over the place. Acrylic is just, spalt, done, dead, next mark.
