>comparing video games to paintings
>>
>>725102994

A thought or expression that changes the way people think or conduct themselves on a massive scale. Something that captures the zeitgeist and exposes reality. Real art has meaning and so because of that, VERY few things are real art.
>>
Republicans aren't people
>>
>>725103543

This thread is full of facts. Don't forget those democrats though.
>>
>>725103386
How very modern of you.

Art is an imitation of the nature of reality. The more closely something can imitate the nature of reality, the more objectively better a piece of Art is. So video games are art. And the better written they are, the more artistic they are
>>
>>725104297

your response was unconvincing and your attitude towards art is lax and postmodern. Not really into low standards. When art is meaningless, it's reduced to novelty.

>>
>>725104502
Actually the idea of art being imitation is thousands of years old, dating back to Greek philosophers. Only modern western societies believe that art is about emotion and creativity. I agree with you that art should have meaning though. It's the difference between objectively bad art and objectively good are
>>
>>725104297
how can you compare art to nature.. you flaunt yourself for your own demise. This is childish
>>
>>725101976
Totally bait; but bored so I'll bite.

Leaving aside other arguments; there's too much art IN them not to be.

Craft. Not art.

>>
>>725101976
What is art
>>
>>725104889
Not nature, bud. The nature of reality. Art imitates reality. Look up the term "Mimesis". No human creation is inherently creative because we as humans can only observe our environment and replicate it
>>
>>725105035
Too often the end result is aimed solely to be something marketable, that sells; but there are plenty that have been done simply for the sake of artistic expression.

there was just a discussion on that

No matter where you go, there you are.

>>725105185
my fault there, but you're still wrong. many artists will argue they've drawn things just because. This usually does replicate real life items, or ideas, but there are exceptions everywhere.

Romanticism tells us that art is from the inner-child.

Classicism tells us that art imitates nature.

Post-modernism tells us that it's all subjective and nobody really knows.

I think all of this is bullshit. At it's full capacity, art should be something that transcends language or culture to create something that resonates in a way that can change people. It's as important to society as science.

The intent of most if not all video games is to create fun. Fun is not an expression that can change the way people think, and it doesn't pull away the layers of reality. It never carries a heavy message, and if it does, there are mediums like literature that are way more effective at asserting a point.

Not only are video games not art, but at the moment, it's impossible for them to by anything but novelty. Maybe some talented people worked on it, but that doesn't make it art.
>>
>>725101976
isn't that what Roger Ebert said?
>>
>>725105360
True, but how many people consider that "good art"? If you just splash a bunch of paint on a page, very few people consider that good art because it's meaningless. It imitates nothing. Except maybe a rainbow, but not even accurately
>>
>>725105517
Not all connotations of art involves causing change. Some are simply expressive, e.g. the artist expressing his mood.
>>
>>725105517
Except the storyline of many video games are deep emotional and philosophical narratives intended to inspire thought and emotion. So by your definitions they are art

>>
>>725105200
Yes, but they failed because an expression in the form of a video is ultimately meaningless and trivial. Not art.
>>
>>725105590
Quality of art not dependent on quantity of people that like it. Or else transformers will be a better work of art than say 7th seal.
>>
>>725105826
>an expression in the form of a video is ultimately meaningless and trivial
So films don't count?
>>
>>725105710

I'm not into post-modernism. If you're going to do anything, it better matter no matter what it is.

>>725105743

Show me a game that changed the way an entire society thought and I'll give it a chance.
>>
>>725105200

no, companies sell what sells, the problem is kids these days don't know what a metaphor is.

video game*

typo

I wouldn't consider Hollywood film to be art. More like propaganda.
>>
>>725106011
Some paintings don't have other intention than simply being beautiful to look at, for example landscapes by group of seven.

Journey is beautiful to look at. Why isn't it art?
>>
>>725102433
that's fair
>>
>>725106193

I see aesthetics as just one element of art.

I guess it's like just eating a piece of cold cut turkey and calling that a sandwich.
>>
>>725106145
Sure you can pick apart superhero movies.

What about japanese films, like Ozu. Or Scorseses taxi driver. You cant discount all movies just because you dont like some of them.
>>
>>725106011
Grand theft auto changed society's views on media viokence
>>
>>725106346
Yet some paintings only have an aesthetic quality, and that is enough for it to be art. Certainly journey which has that aesthetic quality, isnt discounted because it possess accompanying qualities like music and motion?

Stand up comedy is the highest form of contemporary art.

It's one person completely naked with nothing but their ideas. A good stand up can change the way you think and convince you that you were wrong. That's art.
>>
>>725106418

I didn't discount all movies, just most Hollywood releases. Japanese and French film makers at least have standards.
>>
>>725106825
True. My mistake.
So video can be art, and there are cutscenes in games which can be art. And the entire game is basically in interactive audio visual form. Why can't certain games be art?
>>
>>725106575

I just want to clarify that there's nothing wrong with being novelty, craft, or creating a product that is then meant to be sold. There's no shame in not being art. I just think to be considered art, it should have a lasting impact on society. I don't take the term lightly.
>>
>>725101976
And you're a disappointment to your parents.
What's your point?
>>
>>725107051
If somebody comes along and makes a game that doesn't target a demographic and hits home with people of all ages, creeds, and races, while making a smart observation about the times we live in while also being aesthetically and musically focused, I would love to see such a game.

I dunno I see things like aesthetics and sound design to be bricks, not buildings.
>>
>>725107053
Some games have great impact on gamers which make up a sizeable portion of society. Do you mean to say we must exclude gamers opinions?

Most of society arent aware of impact of art. What did you mean by impact? Also, many works of art that arent considered masterpieces dont make any lasting impact. Yet we cant deny the final projects of art colleges are works of art.

Lots of paintings, sculptures, songs, films, dont cater to a general audience. For example, free form jazz. Some people dont like it. It doesnt observe anything. Or art with gore and sex, cant let minors see it. Should we say those works aren't art?
>>
>>725107445
Sure thing child.
>>
>>725107737

Jazz is the pinnacle of post-modernist feces pretending to be art.

At least hip hop is honest, even though most of that sucks too.
>>
>>725107509

Art Bell <3

Didn't know there were radiofags here.
>>
>>725107053
Because I wanted video games when I was a child, that desire taught me how to save money, budget funds, gave me motivation to get and keep a job, etc.
My parent was not able to afford games for me, if I wanted it, I had to earn it myself.
I learned how to keep employment by learning how to navigate being around others, had motivation to get a car and learn how to drive, and other adult related things.
If it wasn't for video games, I'd be a worthless slacker instead of normally functioning adult member of society who knows how to budget my finances and knows the importance of priorities now too.
I still play games, but only after work and necessities are taken care of.
Can you say the same?
>>
>>725103009
lol this fool thinks art means paintings
>>
>>725108011
But anon just because you say so doesnt make it so. Jazz is undeniably art. Music is art. You might not like it but that doesn't make it not art.

You could you dislike games. But art isn't defined on your preferences. To you they are bad art, but art nonetheless.

Another typo from me

Free Jazz*

I hate jazz, but it's art in that it had a place in history and changed the way people thought about music and eventually extended to politics, aesthetics, thought, and even things like food and architecture.

I hate jazz but it is absolute art.
>>
>>725108642
Yes, because no one but /pol/ ever calls anyone a child - fucking moron.
This is how I know you're underage, box of rocks dumb, or have lead a fucking sheltered life. Child is used in real life daily by folks in the South, as well as honey, sweety, etc.
Stop being an ignorant faggot, faggot.
>>
>>725105852
he's not saying its contingent upon the quantity of people that like it. It's just that few people will call it good art, and that there's a reason why few people will call it good art.
>>
>>725109014
Me too anon i just dont get it and feel weird at jazz bars. But still art though.
>>
>>725102836
Any human expression that conveying either aesthetic and/or personal meaning.

>MEANING IS REALLY FUCKING IMPORTANT.

That wasn't very funny is this you being funny? Can't tell.
>>
>>725109063

Some art might be overlooked. For film, we could point to blade runner which was appreciated only later.

Maybe we could say if most "experts" don't call something art its likely not art? Im out of my league now

OP here. This is essentially my point but you said it better than I ever could have.
>>
>>725109873
I wasn't trying at all. You're just retarded. You're trolling is weak too, since everyone knows you're pretending to be oblivious.
You were called out for saying something dumb, now you're acting the part.
Go to bed kid, no one likedm.
>>

I think you're still upset that I called your comeback cliche.

There's no shame in being cookie-cutter.
>>
>>725110442
Here's hoping you die in a fire tonight, kid. Nothing personal.
>>
>>725102764
So that German kid is an artist ?.

Adolf Hitler was an Artist he should've produced more works his Jewish Canvas works were fantastic.

ISIS are great artists their bloodwork is off the chart.

CIA are great artists the way they frame officials in certain lights is amazing.
>>
>>725110549

Well that won't happen, but there's nothing wrong with having your own personal delusions if it makes you feel like you won here.
