Thin people assume fat people have less self-control. When in reality, they have about the same amount of self-control.

So why is one person fat and one person skinny?

Because the body is complex. There are a lot of internal controls that affect how much you eat, how much fat you burn when moving, how much your fat cells store, how hungry you feel.

All this really isn't in your direct control despite what thin people think. They just assume it is gluttony and a lack of self-control, when in reality, its a process that is largely out of your control.

Good Post- you've hit the nail on the head with the multi faceted point- and yeah, thermodynamics has very little to do with it- the bare basics of the whole weight gain/loss/maintenece thing has a lot to do with something called basal metabolic demand. That is, the amount of energy a person uses in just staying alive- we're talking breathing, maintaining body temp, heart beat, the nutrition needed for cellular processes, etc- and this stuff is simple- if you put more energy in that you use, you gain weight. if you put less energy in that you use, you lose weight- and if you get it just right, it stays the same. The last part however, isn't anyhting more than theoretical- your body is always using energy, sometimes it has some ready to go, sometimes, it needs to mobilize some it's stored earlier- this is where Pancreatic hormomes insulin and anthoer you might not have heard of called glucagon come in. Think of GLucagon as the opposite of insulin- Insulin helps your body store glucose ( sugar from foods) for later storage, Glucagon says 'release the stored energy' when your body doesn't have enough.

On top of all of this stuff, I gotta go back to metabolic demand- fat is stored fuel that is not being used. That's what it's primarily for. it does other stuff like cushion organs and stuff, but in terms of weight gain/loss it is stored energy. want to lose it? up the metabolic demand. People exercise- as muscles move, the need energy and that has to come from somewhere- that will make your body metabolize energy- even if you deplete the energy in your blood provided by the meal you ate, the bloodstream will them be tring to put available energy back into the bloodstream- that's going to have to come from somewhere- guess where? Muscle requires maintenance. it has an oxygen demand on a cellular level, and it needs energy to get what is needs in, and it's waste from respiration out- The more muscle you have, the more energy your body has to spend to keep it. Again, this will eat into your fat stores. Diet If you eat a whole bunch of sugar in one go, that is heaps of energy. You aren't going to use it all at once, so you store it- if that is backed up by another meal with more energy than you need, the energy from that is being used and the rest stored for later- this continues, but there is no later.
