I scanned through several of the docs. All in all, exceedingly boring. I think a normal 10 paragraph Reuters article adequately sums up the interesting info from this initial release.

The main thing it does is make it look overwhelmingly like this is legitimate (there were such monotonously boring bureaucratic forms in there, nobody could stand forging all that), and fill in some high level details of what type of hacks they involve, and targeted technology.

All normal smartphones and major operating systems are vulnerable, but everyone knew that. Samsung's smart televisions, on the other hand, are coming out smelling really fucking bad from this. The "fake off" hack, using wakeup timers, exudes negligently bad engineering. "Smart" consumer electronics manufacturers like that need to quit making power lights programmable...if they're active, indicator lights should be on. And if you're adding mics and cameras to items you wouldn't automatically expect it (e.g. a television), there should be nonprogrammable mic-active and camera-active indicator lights as well. I understand there are challenges, like what to do with a microcontroller operating on super low power, reprogrammed to run at a couple hundred hertz instead of normal 5 GHz...flashing the LED during its actual on time would still look "off"...but it sounds like the CIA could basically do anything and keep the power light off. If the US weren't the ones doing most of the hacking, we should pass a law requiring manufacturers to cut this shit out going forward.
