In other words, people who suck at math and didn't take higher level courses didn't have juxtaposition multiplication drilled into their head, and got 9 as the answer. People who are good at math and took higher courses had juxtaposition multiplication drilled in their head, and got 1 as the answer.

However, what this question is a better example of is bad formula etiquette. Because of this contradiction, this formla (and others like it) are labelled as ambiguous, and thus shouldn't be used.

Pepe has 6 avocados. He's a part of a farmer collective, and this month his Avocados will be sold to 2 gentleman that want 3 avocados each.

In this case the answer to the equation is 1.

A different word problem:

Pepe has 6 Avocados. 2 guys want to buy them. That leaves 3 avocados. And his avocados are multiplied by 3, giving him 9 avocados.


Trying to apply this to real life, 1 seems like the more reasonable answer.
