With this realization you have few options.

The best arument i can come up with is that most people have a sense of guilt, if they aren't doing the best they can, and nihilism was created to counter that.
People who are doing good feel better about themselves, so they are happier. And if anything matters in life, it's to be happy as much as you can. If you can't comprehend this, you deserve to be unhappy/tense all your life.

Personally nihilism isn't the answer for me since we are really alive only for ourselves and instead of feeling that in the grand scheme, nothing matters. that we should instead take authority and show how things within our lives no matter how small can be incredibly important to us. I find it better to believe that we are living our lives on the microcosmic level, instead of the macroscopic, but it's understandable see the the hopelessness in both.
