he probably didn't try it again because he wanted to live. most people who try to kill themselves do not try it again if they fail. it is a highly emotionally charged thing and preventing someone from doing it during one or a handful of specific instances is usually enough to avoid it forever. this is why guns are hugely influential on suicide rates.
