The northern states who were only buying and reselling the products from the southern states? Southern states were getting more money by selling to Europe and Europe was getting a better deal by buying from Southern states. It wasn't any kind of malicious interference, it was just free market. The "shit situation" was southern states selling the fruits of their labor to whoever they wanted. Agrarian economies can survive without trade based economies, but trade based economies cannot survive without Agrarian economies feeding them. Lincoln did nothing less than forcibly solidify the union through direct application of violence solely for the financial benefit of the northern states. There is no "greater good" in this story, unless you count the Civil Rights movement which was not even Lincoln's actual intention. He did a good thing, ultimately, but he did it for all the wrong reasons.

Not to mention the fact that the bitterness over this war is why racism and north/south animosity remains a century and a half later while every other civilized nation on earth that grew out of slavery without resorting to a civil war does not have the deep-seated race-relations problems that America has.

Using slavery as the scapegoat for the War is the direct cause of racial tensions today. That is Lincoln's fault.
