i've been playing video games for about 35 years.

done my time on the zx spectrum, bbc micro, archimedes, ps1, 2, 3 4, pro, snes, gamecube, and to a lesser extent the wii and xbox series, plus a lot of pc gaming.

i spent most of my time from 23-33 playing ffxi to a ridiculous level, earning real life money from the game.

i played a lot of other online and mmorpg during that time. at that point i believed no offline or single-player experience could ever give me the amount of content, challenge and depth i needed.

these days, all I want is an interactive story. the better the story telling, the better the game in my opinion now.

i've briefly tried the brinks, cods, battlefields, overwatches, destinies of this world and nothing has ever grabbed me.

there's definitely a place for interactive stories with serious players, especially when there is a lot else to do but play games when you get older and have more money.

Spoken like somebody who never actually played the game. The gameplay was excellent, and the mp was underrated as hell. Probably top 5 multiplayer of the decade imo.
>>

I've beaten the game. Like i said, narrative was great, deserved some awards for best story. But it was just another cover, base, shooter gameplay wise. Nothing spectacular, and many have done it better.

It always gave me this feeling that I would never be able to see everything in the game with how slow it starts out

As I got better both from leveling, making friends, and becoming less ass at it I found myself playing a game that I still have not forgotten creating memories and gay feelings.

I don't think any game has given me that same feeling as XI did when I played it. No idea how to word why I loved it so much.

Is Skyrim the goat? Legit question. I dare you to find me another game released in the last 10 years with the cultural impact Skyrim has had.
>>
>>723572702
i'm curiou as to where you see the disctincton lying.

i mean, i loved all of the MGS series, 5 probably as everybody less in terms of story - I still havent finished it, but thats because I got distracted into getting into the top 50k worldwide.

but i adored MGS4 because it was a powerfully, reasonably well-written, story. now it could have been done better IMO but probably some of that is preference and it has a lot of people to please.

>>723572932
i play all these releases on hard, and welcome it if they have an 'extra-hard' you can access from the start, or second-best, unlock on completion.

i think in all naughty dog stuff, the enemy AI is brilliant on the harder levels, close to kojima levels. interested to know on what level you beat it.

i feel all games now are 'tuned down' for the average player to enjoy, but hard mode is, like, right there, and usually its only on that mode you see the full scope of enemy AI - killzone being a fantastic example. i don't know how anybody could beleive that normal mode on killzone isn't deliberately simplified from original dev intent.

>>723573197
if you don't play it you will miss a pinnacle in gaming. just play on on the hardest mode you can find. its very, very good and yes, its a matinee-mode cover shooter, but thats how the story is told in all the curent ND stuff and its no worse for it, in fact thats the best way to tell these stories.

>>723573250
XI was the best, hands down. i did everything up until level 75, then when they introduced 90 I got very pissed off. I levelled all my chars and alts to 90, beat everything that I couldn't beat before, but I was really annoyed the challenges were killed off before they were truly conquered at lv75.

>>723573537
way to read what you want into a post. ask a proper question, i'll give you a proper answer.

here's one for you. very simple. connected to the thread, too, which is a bonus.

what is a god tier game in your opinion?

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't sound like a pinnacle in gaming if there is no gaming involved.
Sounds like an arcade shooter without a lightgun, and a lightgun is the only part that makes those fun.

Gaming died when it became big money.
I saw it happening, every decent developer shut down or bought out and their work ruined or left to rot.

Want some good games? Well, some have already been listed.
They aren't perfect, but they have something that was new at the time and on the right tracks.
Deus Ex, Outcast, Ufo:enemy unknown (1994), Ultima Online, Terra Nova.

Note these are all pre-2000. There have always been shit games and good games and really amazing games. Now the ones with the money are guaranteed to be shit.
There aren't many real game developers left, just game companies, churning out bottled shit.

I am in the same boat.

FFXI ruined other game experiences for me. I played from 2003-2008, then recently came back, and am hooked like a heroin addict all over again, thanks to the changes they've made.

Alright, it didn't ruin all games, but it certainly set a bar very high for the feeling of being rewarded for challenging work, and it absolutely killed any other MMO for me.

For those who haven't played, it's closest to the original EverQuest. Punishing, hard, requires planning, and in its glory, required collaborative efforts from other people that knew exactly what they were doing and contributing to the team. You lost exp when you died, which forced you to pay attention and tread carefully. The world was alive.

Gothic 2 was very good too, for various reasons.
Foremost, it played well.

Most people who consider a famous game to be the best, simply haven't played good games.
They have no comparison.
This happens a lot as old games become ugly or don't run well on modern systems.

So someone will pick skyrim or the latest shooter - without realising its flaws.

Everything now is watered down, mass marketted for the widest appeal.
What is popular is not necessarily good.
Consider the stuff that excels on television - Reality TV, Karaoke competitons.

loved outcast, when it came out I had a good pc for the time, so I was able to get right into that one.

deus ex not so keen on, i've finished the ps3 one but not keen on that either tbh.

ultima was alright, I wasn't ready to get into an mmo at that point, but from what I know XI beat it out and it sounds like a shame you missed XI.

i am very curious; you seem very committed to gaming, but nothing has grabbed your interest, even fleetingly, in 17 years since 2000?!

i dont say TLoU was the best thing ever, but it was an experience worth having for sure.

I played games from the Atari 2600 onwards.

From what I've seen of FfXI, it doesn't compare to ultima. It looks more like WOW.

Ultima was more or less the first, and was special.
Rules for MMOs didn't exist then, so it was like the wild west.
Everything that came afterwards was babified and simplified.

Maybe some more recent games will come to mind, but really there hasn't been much new in a long time. Publishers own everything and they won't take risks.
The independent developers now just make recycled garbage and retro junk. It is a pity.

Don't know hyper light drifter beyond the name. I'll have a look.

World with nearly complete freedom.
Ridiculous level of detail that was unanticipated at the time.
No levels, no character classes, no races.
No quests, no real tutorial, no documentation.
No recipes.

Nearly everything in the game was player led.
Things were discovered, your knowledge of the game meant success.
Unforgiving.
If you died, your body would lay on the ground, all your items might be taken by a passing player or even a monster.
If you found the monster you kill him and taken it back.
If another player found it first, they were lucky.
55 skills or so, with different possibilities in each as you improved them, with skills affecting and combining with others, unseen by you.
Skills improved by using them.
If you were bored at being a swordsman, you put down your sword and picked up a wand.
Your sword skill dropped, if you chose it, and your magic skill increased.

No restrictions on killing or stealing From other players.
This was noticiable when the creator of the game joined in the beta and was murdered by a player in public while giving a speech.

Players created races, languages of the races, rules, societies, trade systems, shops.
The dangerous areas formed when dangerous players began to live there.

Ultima itself died after the first 2 years of being online.
The creator was kicked out by the publishers, they took over and fucked it all up - making it easier and easier and pay to win, with ridiculousness, restrictions all over and limiting player choice massively.
A game like it will never come again.
They tried, that was the idea behind mortal online - to recreate the early days of ultima.
They didn't succeed.
Half of it is to do with the players nowadays - they've played a dozen MMOs, and there is too much self awareness, everything has a name.
'grinding' as a term didn't exist back then.
This ruins the game and makes it just a game, instead of more than a game.

Better off going out and living.

if you are still kicking about, ffxi was nothing like wow. those who could not hack it in xi, went over to wow.

ffxi needed at least 6-8 experts to do anything. so an expert tank, a couple expert DDs, an expert healer, an expert buffer, and an expert magic DD.

sorry to say expert 6 times, no time to tidy up.

if you did not have these you would fail at the most basic tasks. this made any battle, as the top level ones had to be made up of not only an expert dd, but say, a rng who had speciality in 2 types of arrows, often carried by 1-2 people.

i was very fortunate in that I mained Red Mage, and could with vast amounts of money and time;

>make that character close to paladin in damage mitigation, make it close to warrior in pure damage, ranger in pure ranged.....etc

never 100%, but the fact that in virtually any situation I could handle the problem, and arrange the support, organising 6-18 poorly-organised players, into accomplishing something they never dreamed of (literally, they had turned up to their 10th-20th time at this battle expecting to lose and die, but with no other option but to try) - was fucking incredible.

i used to play 10am GMT through to about 7am the next day, which was 2am PST, picking up plaers from 3 timezones and take away about $500 a day from the items we could sell for real gil.

its sadly left an indelible mark/marker.

UO was epic at the time it was released. Ultima VI has a special place in my heart because of the things you could do:

>get an empty treasure chest
>move a party member into it
>solo as that party member
>you suddenly teleport to the middle of the ocean

>move a townsperson into a treasure chest
>cast disappear on the chest
>townsperson reappears where the chest was; just stands there, can't interact

>move entire town population into treasure chest
>move into a room full of powder kegs
>open the chest
>detonate the kegs

>go to lord british's throne
>cast spider web
>range attack lord british
>lord british can't do anything to fight back

Sounds like it took player skill at least.
Problem is, after ultima, nothing seems as enjoyable.
I tried a lot of varied online role-playing games, they all felt pretty plastic or limited.

Never liked the idea of people buying or selling in game items for money. That ruins the game by making skill in the give less relevant.

Good thing about ultima was if you went out with all your best equipment, someone was going to kill you and take it all.
Meant players had to be good.
Some of the best ran around naked.

Pagan was too arcadey.
Ultima 9 development was halted before it was finished, thanks to the publishers.
It had a lot of good stuff in it though, although it had nowhere near the depth of u6.
It also led to ever other 3d rpg that has come since.

It was also flexible too. It just needed the six months more development that it was supposed to have.
They should have made an ultima 7 style game in the ultima online engine though, in between.

dear god i forgot about that with UO...deciding what equipment to go out with based on where i was going....escaping gangs of players trying to kill me for my gear...

Awesome world where you could be powerful.
The alchemy was really nice. Arcomage too.
Imagine it with modern tech.

i appreciate the feeling totally.

trouble was, in XI, when the JPs went hardcore, you couldn't get the claims.

they were close to server-side, and so unless you were skilled and in a JP shell, you would *NEVER* see the high-level gear.

I speak japanese and ended up paying $3,000 USD to a guy over there to ping the server for a mob appearance, which would then be sent to a jp server we ran for the purpose, and fire our claim commaands.

for about 3-4 years we then took over claims. before that it was jp-onry.

when something would go for 30m gil, and gil-to-$ rate was 10/1, that was $3,000.

so almost every second day we claimed a $3,000 drop. after distribution we retained $1,000 a day in real cash.

not right, but when the japs wrapped it up, it was do that, or not enjoy your game. for $3k investment, seemed a fair play to me....

Xi took a lot of game knowledge to be good. But it had lacking player interaction. The most you could do is cast heals and buffs on other players.

The idea of having to manage your players death value for what you were doing excites me. Building trust with others or misleading someone for personal gains.

U9 had some cool things too.
Poisoning lord British with the bread, crossing an ocean or a mountain range with a bridge made of bottles, books and staffs.
Defeating a skeleton and stealing his pelvis, so he reanimated as a mess.
>>
>>723579903
dunno what you mean tbh. you could pvp with or without penalties (grudge match or courtesy match).

you could cohabit and share rare/ex gear.

or marry and then the woman could take all your shit.......nice one, japan. hilarious

Quantity over quality. After you've used over 50 hours for a game it's not a surprise you advocate it, as you're advocating for your own usage of time as well.

Yeah.
After a while I either wore orc stuff if death was certain, or a high quality player made set.
Seeing a guy in full magic armour worth millions lose it all was warning enough.

What I mean is how much could you do with another player outside of combat.

Sounds like in that Ultima game you had to manage some other things like group trust. Or you could mislead people around through taking to get an advantage.

Think if you were playing XI and didn't know if you could trust another player in your group to not try to kill you and take all the gear you were wearing. Or if you convinced another party a NM was up, for your own group to be waiting there to jump them.

Yeah.
Ultima you could play without ever fighting anything - or play solely killing players, living as a murderer. Or steal everything you need to survive.
Or scavenge, or only ever kill monsters.
Or combine them all.
Was interesting to see the different personalities of players.
Treasure hunters couldn't be trusted as they'd do anything for money.
Fishermen and bakers were peaceful types, apart from when they'd leave a poisoned birthday cake in town.
You could play the game and never visit a shop or a town after the beginning. Living in the wilderness.

The constant threat of death is what made it fun and stick in the emotions.

That's right about Ultima.
It was all about the players, their decisions and their creativity of thought.
No duels or warnings in the first year or two. If someone attacked you, you could run, fight, or die.
One server upped the difficulty by making it more or less entirely player based.
No town guards, everything was too expensive to buy in shops, nowhere was safe.
If you didn't build relationships, you were dead meat from the first five minutes.
Was called Siege Perilous.
That was my favourite server.
Thieves stuck with thieves, murderers with murderers.
Sometimes crazies would run into town and butcher people outside the bank.
Fun stuff.

This is what I want to see in a MMO

I've been playing XIV after playing XI when I was a kid and I've noticed everyone seems the same.

There's a set optimal way to play every job, the gear just gets a bigger number rather than changing how you play or do a fight. You even have a set group of jobs for every dungeon through the dungeon finder.

Seeing another player never feels interesting, they all do the same thing and can't even interact with eachother other than giving a wave.

In a game genre about always being always online why does it feel the other players are the least interesting things.

That game is mediocre at best. Even if you are an LGBTQ loving on it for the lesbian main character, you can't deny it was a cookie cutter Naughty Dog game.

More or less all items in the game could be player made from scratch.

Furniture, bows, weapons, armour, clothes, instruments, tools.

If you had a knife and an axe you could make a lot.
Chop trees, mine for ore, take the ore to your friend's forge or one in town - smelt the ore into ingots, hammer them out into a pickaxe or a sword or a breastplate.
Or make some jewellery.
Go to a field, harvest some wheat, take it to the mill and grind it into flour. Collect some water from the river, make dough, bake it in the oven, collect some herbs, grind them and make a potion. Put the poison in the bread and give it to a player to choke on.
Kill a sheep, take the wool, leather and meat.
Make a pair of boots from the leather, spin the wool to make cloth, dye the cloth red, make a cloak from it, cook the meat, eat it.

Or just go around killing people at random.
