German Shepherds may look tough, but they are rather inbred even by pedigree dog standards, and are prone to all sorts of illnesses throughout their lives and have surprisingly short life expectancy.

Border Collies are renowned for being the most intelligent dog around. However, they are also aggressive and full of energy, due to their original purpose as sheepdogs. Buying one and sticking it in a house for 23 hours a day would be like torture for it. It's going to develop all sorts of behavioral and psychological problems. I would guess that fewer than 1 in 100 dog owners have the skills and lifestyle to properly own one.
