The 2nd had some good ideas. But they weren't really expanded upon, probably due to the laziness of the developers, like you say. The resources system and the construction of your own PMC were really good, just never implemented well in to the game. I remember there being so much dead space and some really shitty factions like 'the Jamaican pirates' who's missions involved water ski races. God, the more I remember it the worse it feels.

What was ground breaking about it. The game is a plane linear shooter. There are long stretches of that game that are very repetitive.

It's main ground breaking thing was the physics engine and using it for puzzles. However, that's why I say the engine was more important than the game.

It ironed some of the problems with the feel of the fighting in the first two. Did a better job of going from pulling evasive maneuvers to launching an attack smoothly.
The difficulty drop in pic related was definitely real compared to the first edition but playing as Vergil was kinda cool.
