Canada, and my ISP is Shaw. I did some more reading and I'm no longer that concerned. From my understanding, they send the email to every single person who has seeded a certain torrent and threaten to pursue legal actions unless you pay a certain fee. In this case its 198$. The thing is, I really doubt they have any intention of suing me or my family specifically, as it's almost definitely not worth their time. Especially not worth it when you consider that in Canada the maximum possible fine for torrenting is $5000. They're likely banking 150 of the 5000 seeders paying up, resulting in pay day for the lawyers. I talked to my mother about it a bit and she has no intention of paying anything. She still hasn't read the filename though, but I'm no longer that concerned as I've established a solid plan to deny everything.

You can have a thousand dollars in late fees for not returning a movie, but you cant be legally charged for more that the dvd you didnt return is worth which is like 20 bucks.

The burden of proof is on them. The must prove that not only did YOU SPECIFICALLY download the torrent but then the have to prove that you did not at some other point in time buy it legally but decided to download a second copy. That is a fucking scam right down to the fucking bones... You will not get any shit about this. All you have to do is call your ISP. SAY that YOU did not download anything that you didnt pay for, and remind them that the burden of proof is on them.

I got this shit once. AT&T tried to charge me for a cell phone line that I had never had with them. Ever. I sent them a letter stating that I never used their service and that if they did not only erase my name from their mailing base but also stop pressing me for a payment that I would take my own legal action. I mailed them photocopies of my letter and their letter with my letter. It never showed up again on any credit check.

This is a fishing scam hoping to scare elderlies into paying for shit they didnt do. Its unethical, and you should tell them so. Dont lose sleep over this op. You have rights and the burden of proof is on them. You dont have to prove your innocence.

it's nothing to worry about. it's a fishing scam.. IP providers don't send emails they mail you a bill, and they would have called also to follow up.

Let me tell you anons something about Rent-a-center places too. Once you've paid a fair market price for whatever furniture you "rented to buy" from them you are off the hook. I paid more that 1000 dollars for a shitty partical board used bed frame and mattress from them. The deal was that if I needed any maintenance it was free, and if I wanted it moved it was free. I broke a bracked fucking my ex gf on it. They refused to come out and fix it. I moved, the refused to help me move my furniture even though I paid for the "deluxe" or whatever the fuck it was deal that said they had to move my shit even if I wanted it in another room. I told them very plainly that i had paid more that the furniture was worth and that they didnt hold up their end of the deal. I stopped paying and wound up giving my friend the bed. Never showed up on my credit report. But these companies suckle off of the timid old timers with pressure tactics.... remember you got rights man. Dont let people push you around. Its legal to push people around. Its illegal to try to charge somebody for more that something is worth.
