I loved the concept, but frankly, unless you speak Russian, the English versions I've read are badly written. Metro isn't too bad and playing the game helps. But the second one is terribly written/translated. The story isn't spectacular either, I get the feeling the author is a one hit wonder.

Just to keep with the point of the thread, I'd recommend The Algebraist by Ian M Banks. Then everything else by Ian M Banks.
Chasm City by Alastair Reynolds is great too, brilliant twist at the end.

Huh, never even occurred to me to do that, audio books always seemed a bit childish to me, but I guess you can listen to them whilst doing other stuff.
