steroids don't give you the drive to repeat this process year after year without letting off your intensity.

Illegally taking steroids means he didn't get them via a prescription. That means he didn't go to a doctor that could have let him know he has a "heart condition" after a proper examination. His intense physical training on top of his steroid abuse and that oh-so-hot sauna killed him.
