First Responder Stories thread?
Pic is OC but not related to the story
>Get dispatched to GSW to head at 3:30am
>Call is only a few blocks from the station
>Respond in the engine and arrive right after law arrives and a medic unit arrives
>I walk in and the medics have the cop suctioning the guys airway
>Pool of blood and blood smeared all over the floor
>I take over suction and take over the guys airway
>I stick the suction catheter into the hole in his face that is the remains of his lower jaw and tounge, now blown apart
>The suction catheter keeps hitting jaw bone
>See the guys jaw bone is blown into multiple pieces with teeth attached
>Suction cant keep up with amount of blood
>Guy is breathing through the blood pooling in the back of his throat, inhaling copious amounts of blood
>Medic sedates and intubates the guy
>I start bagging the guy and we transport priority to the hospital to meet airlift
>Load patient in airlift helicopter he gets taken to a trauma center, outcome unknown
>Kept finding blood on my boots for days, pants were saturated in the guys blood

Here is a story for a day we ran two back to back cardiac arrests
>On day one of a 48 hour shift
>Get dispatched to a cardiac arrest with CPR in progress
>Call is about 9 miles away
>FD arrives on scene prior
>Bystanders witness the collapse and started CPR and applied AED
>Person was shocked back by bystanders
>When we arrive, patient is conscious and alert
>We transported priority to the nearest cath lab 20 miles away
>Get back to quarters and get dispatched to another CPR in progress, FD arrives and defibs the guy
>He gets shocked back to a better rhythm but never wakes up
>Transport to nearest cath lab, guy presumably dies

>Dispatched to a welfare check, law enforcement requesting us to stage
>They were dispatched to a welfare check, wife hasnt heard from her soon to be ex husband who has the kids for the day
>law arrives on scene and notes a strong smell of gasoline from the front door
>Officers obtain a warrant and call for us to stage
>we arrive and wait for them to make entry
>They make entry shortly after arrival
>Find a 4 year old watching TV on the couch, gasoline is poured everywhere
>Further down the hallway they go into a back bedroom and find the husband
>Husband has blown his brains out with a shot gun brains all over chunks of face too
>Dead baby sitting on the bed that he killed as well
>He must have thought the shotgun would ignite the gas and burn the 4 year old and kill everyone
>He even wrote a suicide note, he was acting apologetic

Here is the story behind this picture
>Get dispatched to a two car head on MVA, possibe fatal
>arrive on scene
>a dodge pickup has crossed the center line in the rain attempting to pass a vehicle and did not see an oncoming vehicle
>Collided head on with a Saturn sedan
>18 year old girl ejected and killed on impact
>looks like every bone in her body is broken, shes mangled
>Driver faces no charges since it was a passing zone
>driver walks over to state trooper to give statement and looks at her body as he is walking by, seemingly unphased

I'm a firefighter /EMT -IV Tech, I deal by having hobbies and the more than occasional alcoholic beverage. Plus you get less and less phased by shit the more you see it.

I imagine. Is there any event that has left you somewhat traumatized or have you been able to cope with it all?
>12am
>Dispatched to chest pain
>Guy has known blood clots in his heart
>He wants us to take him to a hospital 100 miles away even though he has an appointment there in the morning
>we tell him to just wait for his appointment since this is a known problem
>while we are unhooking the ekg the pager goes off
>Get dispatched to CPR in progress on a 1 year old
>arrive as the second medic unit on scene, engine is already there as is a command unit
>walk in the door, see the parents crying on the couch
>Can see a bunch of crew member huddled in a room,
>everyone has a task, whether its bagging, holding up the IV bag, doing compressions, dosing drugs, etc
>can see a pale pair of little legs moving with each compression
>Stand outside the door and wait to be called in
>Get swapped out with another guy to do compressions on the kid
>Start CPR, using only a few fingers due to the kids size
>can fee his lungs inflating under my fingers with every artificial breath
>Look on the kids face is forever burned into my memory
>after a few rounds of compressions and drugs the kid makes no progress
>call for orders to cease efforts, not required but lets the responsibility fall back to the local hospital and not the crew

I have been traumatized by quite a few calls but I still cope with them. The one above was probably the hardest. I love going on traumatic calls though in a way. There is no high better than the adrenaline rush you get working to save a life

>Sitting at home, call goes out for a structure fire, occupant trapped on second floor
>Im about 6-7 miles out
>Respond POV because both units at my station are out
Haul ass to the city ( I love out of town)
>Getting closer to town I can see the plume, its about 4pm in the summer
>Arrive on scene
>Fire is ripping
>A bystander grabbed a ladder off of our engine, climbed up and through a brick through the second floor window to try to break it in an attempt to let someone out, fueling the fire
>bystanders say they seen someone banging on the window
>police arrive and make entry, getting one guy out, trying to go upstairs but the heat is too intense
>we eventually get lines stretched and make entry
>By the time I get there, I am swaping out to relieve the first due crews
>Go back up the interior crew inside, fire is too hot to get knocked down, self ventilating through the roof
>A couple hours later the fire is knocked down and it is cool enough to make entry in the room, body is upstairs by the bed
>Skin is charred blavk, bones visible, flesh torn in multiple spots exposing muscle
>skull cap is broken open on the top and the brain has popped out and burned up
Skull cavity is empty, with the exception of a small amount of pooled blood
>While we wait to recover the body while the coroner documents the scene, dominoes arrives
>eat pizza and wings with PD until its time to get the body out
>turns out I went to elementary school with the girl who burned up
>Get dispatched to CPR in progress about 10 miles away
>15 year old found down
>Arrive on scene in engine shortly after medic unit and command unit arrives
>Swap in for compressions on the teen
>After a while the kid starts spitting up tons of blood
>Every chest compression is pushing blood out of his mouth
>hes intubated and being bagged at this point
>dad is screaming around about not wanting to lose his son
>Screams at us every time we stop to do a rhythm check, telling us we cant do that
>Kid isnt making any progress so we get read to call it
>Decide to call for law before in case the dad freaks out on us
>blood is spewing out of this kid, getting all over my gloved hands, watch, and my bare forearms
>Pronounce kid dead and go BS outside with the crew
>Have to go shower the kids blood off of me at home
> Driving down the road after nursing school
>Watch a lady road raging with another person.
>gets out of her car at a red light, yells and beats on the guys window.
>She gets back in her car.
>light turns green, she tries ramming his car.
>she tries to speed in front of him
>as she tries to pass him, a guy in an SUV drives out of a 7-11 and she ends up T-boneing the SUV
>Glass in both cars explode, SUV gets tossed across the street into someones front yard.
>She gets out of her car, pissed off.
>I drive off laughing my ass off.
