I agree with you. It is socialism that people are riling against, not liberals as such. Or maybe it is both.

Now, regarding your assumptions regarding poverty and the welfare state:

People are not on food stamps because it gives them more freedom. I do not know how much money benefits gives a person, but it is not enough for a life of unbridled excess only seen by those born wealthy enough not to have to pay taxes, for example.

Many people in poverty work despite needing benefits to survive.

Now ideologically, the welfare state was created in order to provide for those in society that cannot provide for themselves. For better or for worse, it helps us look after our own in society and for me it's a hallmark of civilization.

I mean, what else am I going to be paying taxes for?

And this is where i am in agreement with the conservatives. Slash taxes if you are going to slash social welfare. Even better, do away with taxes alltogether; let's privatize everything. Healthcare, roads, the justice system.

Let money dictate our lives, but let it be money that we earn ourselves.

Do away with all government interference, let people truly rule themselves.

Except that it doesn't really work like that.

There needs to be a balance. With need a moderate centre left government run by boring bureacrats willing to sacrfice their health and well being for the benefit of the nation.
