The swelling normally builds over years and surgery is required. I would know because I've had the surgery that I've mentioned above yours. Fortunately I was in the service when it happened so I didn't have any out-of-pocket costs.

If you're going to go into the service I suggest ignoring it until it happens. That way you can claim it was due to training and they won't consider it a pre-existing condition. If it is a pre-exist they will likely deem it as a breach of contract, discharge you medically, and you would have to pay it out of pocket.
