I don't think your example properly applies to this situation. You had a difference of opinion with your prof in college, i.e., at the beginning of your adulthood. And it was a professional difference of opinion, even though it might have been amateurish on your side. I agree with you that any 7 year old, at any time in history, would find most art galleries boring, but my Furby vs. David quip was meant more in the sense that kids, watching this new media, do not develop the skills, if they may be called that, to appreciate higher forms of art. Besides, *usually* books for children, and some better TV shows, provide a stepping stone to higher reaches of art. A first instruction in the language you referred to. Or, in the very least, they get then acquainted with the medium in the case of literature.

What is quite interesting, that this unfettered freedom in consuming content (children's entertainment, news or whatever) -- usually freedom from editorial oversight -- may end up unravelling the capacity of many to understand more complex ideas, address more complex problems or enjoy more complex pleasures. What has once been general and familiar will become a remote 'intellectual'

YT is still in it's infancy though. Production values on shows have been increasing exponentially. Like JonTron, his show was at first a single camera show where him and some guy would play a video game and riff back and forth. Now his shows have budgets, camera crews, lighting and makeup artists, sets, and often 20+ minute episodes. People can put a news show up and talk about literally whatever they want. Indie radio stations are starting to pop up that don't just have the billboard top 100 as a playlist. Talk shows where people can talk about real issues or batshit insane stuff. The variety on youtube is expanding and the content is only getting better, just watch.
