Why do men have short hair and women long?

Gender norms. The same reason why men wear suits and women wear dresses. But I'm a man with long hair, so this question is irrelevant to me.

I've had and known lots a men to have long hair. I've known plenty of women with short / pixie type cuts.

The answer to your question is "too make themselves appear more stereotypical as to evoke desire in those that desire a mate matching the stereotypical look".
