The best thing about 4chan is the variety of boards, collective of funny, smart idiots who populate them and that the site isn't swayed to conform to a certain group. It's not mainstream enough - it's niche

The best thing about /b/ used to be that as 4chan's biggest and most ridiculously retarded board a lot of funny shit would happen. When people say /b/ has become cancer or it was always shit... Idk but /b/ has changed. There used to be a huge diversity of threads. It's /b/ you could discuss anything. Statistically speaking /b/ is by and large "porn" now - by this i mean /b/ was discovered by horny teens and it's all porn webm, JAV (what is that?), fb fap, and weird fetish stuff like fur and traps (they're gay btw). Sure theres a YLYL or something here and there, and theres always some sorry anon looking for advice on something, but the scope of /b/ has by and large diminished by magnitudes. /b/ Never does organized raids/terrorizing the internet much anymore, gore threads were a funny way to keep normies off the site and they're largely gone, instead of random threads with genuinely weird niche and over the top humor we have YLYL threads with recycled material.

Honestly people don't want to put in effort. I think 4chan and /b/'s downfall have been laziness. This is exasturbated by poor moderation/leadership as well no doubt. No one creates content anymore, just shares content. No one's willing to take initiative. Also a lot of the no life true /b/tards that "made shit happen because they had nothing else to do" seem to be gone/only lurking? And hell it's a rule not enough people follow - Lurk moar, it's never enough. People started to flood the site with impressions of what it was and never lurked and learned. You used to have to ask what memes were because /b/ was a more chaotic and nerdy place - you had to truly be on here a lot and lurk in order to get the inside jokes. Theres none of that.

Next point. There's probably too many people for /b/ to be great. Sure 4chan still isn't main stream despite it's noteriety for past achievements of sorts. That said, /b/ still has a user base of magnitudes upon magnitudes larger than when it started or when i joined over a decade ago. It's too many people talking, and too quickly, and all the ideas get jumbled and you can't read everything posted cause theres too much of it. The humor, authenticity, originality, and sense of wonder that used to come with the site was how much simpler it was. or more organized? Sure the nature of /b/ has always been chaos, but you had a bunch of uniquely weird and identifiable threads instead of a repetitive, overlapping mess of porn. Threads dedicated just to people counting to 4 and people actually trying to make it happen because we're retards and that's what we do. /b/ writing autistic poems 1 word at a time. Old school memes centered around humor and not the image themselves.

That's another thing to touch on and it may just be me. These weird mixes of "aesthetic" and "ghetto" and whatever else type of memes where it's weirdly filtered/photoshopped to oblivion pictures... idk it's not that funny tbh. 1) i'm not saying i dislike vaporwave. i have plenty of wall papers and music to go along with it, and some of it is cool and interesting. 2) i'm not saying memes should just be "pics with captions" either, but in their simplicity there was humor. The content that is being created now is focused on being weird or relevant to pop culture. The shit that's on platforms like iFunny, Facebook, Twitter, etc is just so cancerous. but "lol i am normie highschooler/co ed and omg this is soooo relatable i also buy chocolates on valentines"... anyone who's been sucked into the internet more than 5 years will remember that content was just plain different and IMO funnier.

As I was looking through the catalog to find a decent thread or two i was reminded of one of the most frustrating things. Rate threads. There are several types and i'll address each.

Body parts: tits, asses, or most commonly dicks. honestly the problem here is how often they come up. it moderately feeds into the "porn-ification" of the sight, but guys relax on your dicks, go get validation on some chat app.

Facebook friends or the like: again this just feeds into the same "porn" part of /b/ which is reflective of /b/ being swamped by horny teenagers. Kids, learn to disociate /b/ from porn. There is a board and other websites for porn. I personally like xnxx, pornhub, etc

This last part is 2 things i'm lumping as one: face rates, and the faces of /b/ threads. You guys don't know how bad this is. This is in fact the most normie thing on the site and in my opinion one of the worst if not the worst things on /b/. Look, on one level this shows people haven't read the 50 or so rules of the internet. Funnily enough, if you actually look at the rules they are all there for a reason. ANONYMITY people. Anonymity is quite LITERALLY the reason for 4chan's creation. You are an anonymous autist with no social skills and you definitely don't have a girlfriend - if you're OP you're also a fag. THIS is your identity. When you teach me something about gravitational physics i dont want to know you are Josh the physics major. If you introduce me to a video game, i don't want you to know you are Kyle who has black hair and glasses and lives in Kansas. It is probably the only sacrilege there could be on 4chan - breaking your anonymity. It ruins the authenticity of the site. You don't come here to get likes, no one knows who you are. 4chan isn't here to feed into the culture of validation. You're not important. We are all EQUALLY unimportant.
