We talking theory or practice? Things bend and stretch irl.
Something that's point nine bar at the north pole is likely over one inch long at the equator.
>>
>>722625281
>point nine bar of an inch*
>>
>>722625101
Except anyone who knows even the most basic math.
Because it is *exactly* the same as 1.

Won't bother explaining why, because trolls and all that shit, but it is basic math. Read the Wikipedia page, really.
>>
0.999... = 1

Disprove it fags
>>
Ian Stewart rolls in his grave.

Infiniti is not a number, nor is it calculable with normal whole numbers in a basic sense.

.999... to the infinite is an abstraction from what a real number is.

.999... is not = 1
>>
1/3 = 0.33333333...
3/3 = 0.99999999... = 1
>>
>>722625597
Sure, because the opinion of a stoned idiot who can't even write "infinite" means a lot.
You'll have to do something with your life at some point, you know? Stop with the blunts and learn some shit instead.
>>
x=0.999999
10x=9.9999
10x-x=9.999-0.999
9x=9
x=1
>>
>>722625650
this is the proof we all learn at uni and you can't deny these 2 lines. There is another kind of maths (I forgot the name) where 0.999... actually is 0.999... and not 1 but this is not the kind of maths that is relevant to us
>>
>>722625101
There's a certain point where in practice it doesn't matter anymore.

This is why engineers make bank, and physicists have problems finding work outside of academia.
>>
>>722625737
I've always preferred this one instead:
>Real numbers is a compact set.
>So between any two real numbers, you can find a new, different number.
>IE: between x and y there is (x+y)/2.
>Could you find a number between 0.999... and 1?
>If you can't, they must be the same number.
>>
>>722625368
>it is *exactly* the same as 1.

.999... with 20 thousands of 9's is = 1?
that means that with 20 9's it's also = 1?
and with 2 9's it is also = 1?
So .9 would also be = 1????
IDIOTS !!!
>>
>>722625948
Engineer here.
Where did you study that you became an engineer without knowing even basic math?
Because anyone who studies any branch of engineering here sure knows enough math to know that 0.999... is exactly the same as 1.
Now go talk about how good engineers are...
>>
>>722625650
0.999.../3 = 0.333...
2.997.../3 = 0.999...
>>
>>722625978
also nice but one might argue to put another 9 behind the last nine because infinity doesn't really exist
>>
>>722626054
.999... implies that the 9 never ends
It's different to .999 and .9
>>
>>722626054
Ok, you want to go that way? I can do it too.
>The difference between 0.9 and 1 is 0.1.
>The difference between 0.99 and 1 is 0.01.
>The difference between 0.999 and 1 is 0.001.
And so on.
So we can say that for x nines, the difference is 10^-x.
And now we can calculate the limit when x approaches infinite:
lim 10^-x = 0
x→∞
So, when you have infinite nines, the difference is exactly 0. And that means that they are exactly the same number.
Simple, with just high school math. Which you seem to have failed, though.

You sat that the difference will be smaller and smaller the more 9's we have.
Fair game, I agree.
Smaller and smaller difference.....
until you decide that the difference no more exists.
How can the difference that you claim to be, suddenly just dissapear???
It doesn't, it just getting even smaller...
until the dawn of universe.

Learn how to use an infinite series you stupid fuck
>>
>>722625101
1/3 = 0. 33333333....
2 x 1/3 = 2/3 = 0.666666...
3 x 1/3 = 3/3 = 1 = 3 x 0.33333... = 0.999999...

1 = 0.999....
>>

>>Real numbers is a compact set.

That's not what a compact set is.
>>
>>722626621
Do you know the concept of limit?
Now, I'm really curious, that is high school level math here.
How did you graduate school without knowing that?
What country lets this happen?

Anyway, if you wanted some fun... Ok, have this:
To go somewhere, you first have to get halfway there. And once you're there, for the new distance you first have to get halfway of that. So you will never reach your destination, as you always have still more distance to go.
By your logic, you can't move.
>>
>>722626294
>So, when you have infinite nines, the difference is exactly 0. And that means that they are exactly the same number.
When you have infinite repeating decimals you'd have to spend your entire waking life transcribing the concept onto paper to calculate the difference between 1 and .9 repeating. It is therefore practically incalculable and saying that it is equal to one is akin to saying God created the universe because the alternative is upsetting or seemingly impossible.

You've all fallen for the religion of mathematics.

The answer is that there are mathematics is not logically perfect - it is human and flawed, though the majority of mathematicians don't want to believe it. It can be *mathematically* proven that 0.999... = 1; it cannot be proven with logic. They are the same within the constructed fantasy realm of mathematics. In reality they are distinct
>>
>>722626944
The fact that he calls mathematics a religion should be a dead giveaway. Anyone that knows how it works can tell it's terribly wrong

No, and in fact several people have tried and failed to provide a logical foundation for maths, most famously Frege.

For a basic overview of what they are and why they are not the same, here are some articles you can read:
