We used a different acronym in the 90s at school, but the order was the same. Had trouble with it so my father explained it from his school days in the 60s.

The order is arbitrary but standardised so people take the same equation and get the same results.

PEMDAS is nothing new.
It is important, and anyone that does not know it does not know mathematics beyond what they need to count change when flipping burgers.

(I grew up with BODMAS - Brackets Of Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction - that is Of as in Power Of, and the order of multiplication and division does not actually change the result.)
