I'm a former Marine infantryman with two tours in Afghanistan that's been diagnosed with PTSD. It isn't something I talk about with anyone but since I'm spewing into the abyss of 4chan I'll give it a whirl. Of course, I'm well aware of what they say about staring into abyss (ses?)

Anyways...veterans of combat have always come home deeply affected by war. In WWI they called it "shell shock", WWII it was combat stress or combat fatigue, Vietnam it was something different. Don't quote me on that exactly but you get my point. Nowadays it's called PTSD. In fact, some scholars say the Odyssey was about PTSD in a way. Returning from war isn't easy. You're taught to kill for whatever reason (jingosim, nationalism, etc.) and survive by killing people that try to kill you. That isn't really a normal existence. It obviously changes the way you see the world and react to it long after the war is over.

Finally, I totally understand the comparison between wars. I always think, "At least it wasn't WW2 or..." but the point is that every war is brutal in its own way.

While Iraq and Afghanistan can't compare to the body-count of previous, global wars, the battlefields frequently shift from periods of peace and an appearance of normalcy to absolute carnage.

While I can't imagine being shelled for hours or days, I did have to watch every step I took and wondered when my legs would be blown off and I'd die staring into the sun or watch families be torn apart suddenly and inexplicably.

Once, a young boy and his brothers were asking for candy from local police as they passed through our checkpoint and the Taliban took the opportunity to open fire on the group of police officers handing out candy. A bullet tore through the brain of a kid I had nicknamed "Good Kid" because he always seemed happy and bright passing by.

He fell over flat while everyone took cover and his cerebral fluid and blood pooled in the dust in front of his younger brothers. I still remember the vacant look in the youngest boy's golden green eyes. It was as if someone tore out his soul when he was just three. The dead kid's father was actually on the other side of the checkpoint and came out from hiding during the gunfight to see me desperately trying to save his already dead son's life.

I went to war an idealist and grew into a realist. I've realized five years later that not letting the war take my humanity was the way I'd move towards healing and peace. Now I'm a long haired hippie faggot that loves guns and hates war :) Don't regret it at all.

2 to iraq 3 to afghanistan
