You're right, in order to define atheism you have to define god. And without god, there is nothing to not believe in, so atheism ceases to exist at the moment theism ceases to exist. Which means if atheists are proven right, atheism ceases to exist. A lot like Christianity, if god was proven religion would cease to exist, faith would cease to exist.

at that point doesn't that mean that if theism was proven, atheists would become the ones relying faith for their beliefs? So say god is proven, but some choose to disbelieve the scientific proof. At that point don't the atheists become faith based, does that mean that atheism is a religion at that point? And if atheism is then scientifically proven, doesn't that mean that religion would return to being faith based, and atheism would then be science based? And if science then proves them both wrong simultaneously, does that make them both religions in the face of the newly proven truth?

Maybe, I guess atheism wouldn't really cease to exist given that unless one proves a scientific study to oneself via doing it them themselves, it would be faith to a degree anyway, faith that published and peer reviewed sciences are in fact 100% accurate and without human error or deception.
