So I have a questions for the burgers out here:
In all of the american movies and TV shows that I have watched, when two characters get married, they go to the church, and a priest does the ceremony.
I'm a froggie, and here you can get married religiously (be it in a church, a mosque or whatever) but this wedding has no legal value. In order for the state to recognize the wedding, you have to go to the city hall and have the mayor do the ceremony.
My question is this: is the religious wedding recognized by the state in America? Or do the characters go to the city hall off-screen afterwards?
Even in pic related, they say the wedding is legit because Barney is somewhat a priest.

You can either be married in a church by a priest or at the courthouse by a judge. Doesn't matter as long as there are witnesses and a certified officiant.
It varies by state but you topically go to city hall, get your paper work, and you have to have the ceremony within 60 or 90 days and the priest or officiant signs it, then mails it to the state for filing. If that's not enough, lrn 2 google

Thanks.
Most clergy get a license from the state that allows them to legally marry people

Did not expect that actually, but google just told me that america has a different idea of church/state separation than france, so ot makes sense.
